I finally used up my supply of free Priority USPS video cassette boxes, I think they're nearly perfect for sending folder.

Anyway I got on the USPS site, ordered some more.

They new boxes are probably 20% thinner, and the fold and tab slots are not well cut. I ended up having to do some of my own cutting as well as a big swath of tape around both axis. :(

Dave,

I haven't gotten the video cassette boxes in a while. It sounds like I won't be getting any soon. I prefer the ones that are roughly 3"x12"x18". They cost the same to ship a knife in, plus give a little extra room. The extra room makes it harder for the knife to "accidentally" fall out in shipment. The larger package should be harder to lose too. They seem to have gotten a little bit flimsier, but not a lot.

The other reason I get those is that my wife makes handmade purses and we don't have to get two kinds of boxes.

I got a roll of the priority tape and use that to tape the heck out of the priority boxes...overkill is the name of that game.

you have to put extra tape on them, it seems the new ones with insides printed "priority mail" have inferior glue on the tab and like to pop open

Guys, I am sure that some company has been contracted to make these for the USPS and it sounds like they did a poor job in several areas. I would write to the USPS and tell them the problems that you are seeing, without doing that they may never notice and will not Reject/Return the defective cartons to their supplier. If there are any identifying numbers on the boxes (ie. Prod Code, Run Date, etc) include that when you contact them.

Just a suggestion that may help others and keep them from getting these defective boxes.

It's a shame when you can't count on the quality of free stuff anymore :p

They aren't really free. You probably pay for them every time you ship Priority Mail, whether you use their box or not.

Ritt is so right.

I use several different sizes and have learned that you should always tape any of self seal boxes. I'll live with the little problems since the price is right.

I just picked up a case last night at the PO. No tape for the flaps? Whoever designed these was just trying to cut costs. I had to tape the hell out of a box!

No worries for me about the flimsy boxes...I use 1/2 a roll of packing tape on all the packages that I send anyway.:D.

There are 2 kinds. The ones I had been getting for a long time was the thinner ones.I was wondering how some of the guys I was tradeing with were getting the thicker ones, seemed like they were better.A month or so ago my PO finnally got the thicker ones in.I only have 3 left, need to pick up some more.
I haven't had any problems with any of them.I tape over the sides where the tabs fit in and over the flap and pull tabs.I also put tape over the label in case it gets wet.

An excellent point. How much you figure DaveH owes me?
:D

FYI I received on of those new boxes today with a knife in it. The flap tape had failed and the only thing keeping the box from flopping open was the insurance label.
