I had a package waiting at my local post office with Signature Confirmation. When I went to pick it up, it turns out they had given it to another person by mistake who signed their own name for it. They know who has the package and are trying to recover it. I don't believe the package was insured.

My question is this. If they do not recover the package, are they liable for the contents, or am I out of luck. Also, would the person who signed for it be guilty of fraud if they refused to return the package.

Thanks

Tom

Does this person share the same name as you?

I'm no postal expert, but yes, i believe that the P.O would be liable to reimburse you for the contents even though it wasnt insured.
If the person refuses to return the package, contact the postal inspectors, explain the problem, and they will probably sort your P.O. and the individual out.

Totally different name. I think it may have been inadvertently mixed in with other packages that did belong to the person who signed for it.

I would guess it was merely an accident, the USPS is running on overdrive this time of year. Keep in touch with them and see if they will stay on top of the matter. Esav has much more insight into these matters than we do.

They have The POWER !!! :D

How long has it been? I think your post office will get it back for you.

This just occurred on Saturday.

I suspect that I will get it back. I'm just hoping that I don't get a used knife back. I wonder what the guy thought if he opened the box and found that Spyderco Yojimbo. :D

If the individual doesn't return it call the postal inspectors. I had a similar issue once and they quickly resolved it.

I just wanted to update this. I received the package today from the Post Office and everything is fine with the contents. Thanks again to those that replied.

Happy ending! Cool. For future reference, I have an old Army buddy who actually transferred from the DEA to Postal Inspector. Those guys have an unbelieveable amount of power. You wouldn't have had to call them IF the package hadn't been returned, the Post Master of the office that screwed up would have done that for you and "Somebody" would have gotten a knock at the door AND the package would have been recovered OR somebody was going to jail.
Postal Inspectors don't play.
