Yesterday I was in a knife shop and they had for sale a few sample knives from Utica Cutlery. It was some good looking knives from their survival series but instead of a black coating on the blades the blades were polished and looked really good. Since they were samples to see if the store wanted to carry the Utica line the person behind the counter did not know anything about them but after some research by me online I learned the steel is 1095 but their line is all black coated in general.

Who is Utica Cutlery and what is their level of quality. I know of KA-BAR and Ontario being of that region but I am not familiar with Utica. Are they high quality or do they just produce a bunch of crap for other makers.

The quality of the survival series that I touched were very nice and the handle material fit well.

Utica has been producing knives in America for well over 50 years ( maybe even over 100 ) and the reason you may not have heard of them is because they mostly make traditional folders and aren't big on the whole trying to market " the latest and greatest " thing that most companies revolve around.
Their knives are similar in quality to Bear & son in that they may not be the greatest most consistent folders in the world every time but they are affordable American made beater blades, and I've heard of things improving a bit recently.
I would say that if you're interested in the knife and the price is good you should take a gamble on it.
According to you the fit & finish of the knife seems great, so don't worry about the reputation they may or may not have and just find out for yourself how good the blade is.
