So, as I posted in my Ren Fest thread, I have become extremely interested in Utilikilts. I decided to go ahead and get one. When I got it, it was for the same purposes as I was wearing my family tartan, weddings, big to-do's, Scottish festivals and gatherings, etc. Lately, a few people I've heard from that have one say that they wear them for other "everyday" sort of activities as well, like going for a stroll through the woods and stuff like that. This surprised me. I thought that people who wore kilts these days pretty much only did so for occasions that required them to. I hadn't considered wearing one for a woods outing or anything. Anybody else got one of these things or something similar, even a traditional kilt, that they wear for regular stuff like daily wear or hiking? I have to admit, it does sound comfortable. Probably keep you pretty dry "down there."

lumpymike1 said he had one I think and he loved them. Lumpy, if you have any other kind things to say about them or info or opinions on other styles they do, let me know. I think it's funny that they have a "survival" version.

Also, the pockets on these things are terrific. The one I'm getting is the "original". The pockets look outstanding. Belt loops look pretty sturdy too. Mine should show up tomorrow.

Awesome. Not my thing, but if I was into kilts, the utilikilt would be the way I'd go.

I just have a standard verson, again hoping for the survival this year. I have a buddy who has that and the Spartan. He does MMA in it and often people get an eyefull. He wonders why I have never gone to one of his matches.

I don't really care for the Mocker or tuxedio. My standard is in black and I have worn it so semi-formal events (always my friends or side of the family, or the wife cuts off the lovin) and to work on somedays when I know HR is understaffed.

I need to go look at the site and drool again.

I have a kilt in my clans tartan(MacGregor), its true that kilts are more comfortable than pants.
I dont hike in it obviously.

I've been wanting to get a Utilikilt for a while now. I think it's finally going to happen this spring. I haven't quite made up my mind between the original and the mocker. I like the look of the mocker but I bet the extra pocket space in the original would be useful. I think I'll be wearing mine more for every day kind of stuff (including hiking, backpacking and camping) than I will for semi-formal occasions.

Wife's side of the family is having a "themed" reunion this year....the boys and I have been "cleared" for kilt-wearing.

I will be getting the green Survival Utilikilt...the younguns will get homemade ones. :p

I'm not from Scot stock....but with the reddish/ruddy brown hair & beard...I imagine I won't be too shabby in one. :D

Can't wait to get it! (probably after the Blade Show)

I used to do alot of renfairs and such and alot of my friends swear by utilikilts, There is actually an OR nurse where I work who werars one to work all the time since he wears scrubs in the OR anyway. Ive only worn one once the are pretty comfortable but I wouldnt wear it REGIMENTAL in the woods

kilts in general are wonderful things. i really like my utilikilt. i do a lot of contra dancing and it is about perfect for that. the pockets are terrific. it is very easy to carry a spydie and the rest of you stuff. mine is green but i have admired the charcoal color also. they are very well made.

i was planning on picking up a utilikilt a few weeks ago, but as soon as i had the funds saved up my primary mode of transportation decided to break down (the rear derailluer on my road bicycle snapped in half), so my money went to fixing that.

i still plan on getting one though. i imagine i would wear it often and everywhere, just like pants. actually, i love the idea of wearing one hiking...more flexiblity and freedom of movement, and i wouldn't have to strip to wade across a stream or river.

I have a friend who wears a kilt pretty often for all sorts of stuff. He swears by them as best of all guarments. He even literally travled round the world in one.

Although im Scottish there not really my thing but they are actually pretty practical. I did have a bit of a laugh at the utilikilt but it is a great idea

My bro has the Utilikilt in black. I have a Sportkilt as does my boy in the 'Black Watch' tartan. Just got it a few months ago so I've only worn it around the house a few times and out for St. Paddy's Day. We're of Scottish blood so it seems to fit for us, besides women seem to really dig a guy in a kilt. Mucho compliments that day. Real comfortable I must say. Gonna get another in the 'Hunter' tartan and maybe a camo one.

The Utilikilts look like a great idea. I have 1 beater kilt right now (Blackwatch from Stillwater), and am planning on going for the real deal (11 oz, 8 yard in Ancient Campbell). That'll set me back about $500, so the Utilikilt will have to wait. Kilts are great for hiking. Just have to watch out for sudden wind gusts in the mountains.

Wonderful to see a fellow kilt-wearer on here! I only wear mine for special occasions, i.e. parties, weddings, etc. However, I've never heard of a "utilikilt." I must say that when I wear my sporran (for the non-kilt wearers reading this, it's the chain-linked pouch you wear around your waist, in front below your abdomen) it doesn't hold that much, only keys, wallet, and MAYBE a SAK. Do you know of any links where I could read more of a "utilikilt"?

However, it seems that only learned, educated, and cultured women appreciate and dig a man in a kilt....gonna have to keep my eye open for those types! :D

Their website is great. Utilikilt I always kept a sandwich in my sporran. It was just the perfect size. haha

Sasha, I think you'd be ok. I don't think anyone has anything against a Russian in a kilt. My buddy Ivan was a 6'2" martial artist from the Czech Republic who just so happened to be known as Ivanna in the evenings. Nobody gave him any crap and he was in a straight up dress. Should be smooth sailing for a kilt.

On the subject of chafing. I'm not the skinniest guy in the world (said the whale) so I am no stranger to chafing on long hikes. I did an 8 mile walk through a couple of towns not too long ago and by the time I stopped, I was bleeding from heat rash and chafing on the inside of both thighs. BLEEDING. It sucked. Just another reminder for me to grab the Gold Bond before i head out on long walks. I'll be very interested to see if the dryness and lack of material between thighs reduces the chafing to nothing. If so, I might never wear pants for a long walk again. The chafing is always my biggest complaint.

Ok. So the Utilikilt got here yesterday. Seems pretty damn cool. I'll be giving it a test run this weekend and next weekend on long distance walking and hiking in it to see how it goes.

On a side note... Thank you Mr. Perdue, you procrastinating b@$tard for finally signing the bill. LETS ALL GO OUT TO EAT AND BRING OUR GUNS!!!! State park sickos, BEWARE!!!
