Utility of single blade knives

I have been carrying a copperlock for more than a year. Back pocket mostly; I have been in a situation where I wear jeans or khakis rather than suits or dressier pants. The handle comment is spot on. Also something to be said about not having to dither about the right blade for the job. The copperlock is a really nice design IMHO.

Lately I have been leaning more towards 2 blade jack knives, but I will always keep a few single blade knives around. There is something special about the slim profile and simplicity of just one blade that I am very fond of.

I almost exclusively carry single bladed knives. I hate bricks in my pocket and it seems like single bladed knives never bother me.

Very nice Jason. Whats the bottom one in the group pic? Thats just an amazing knife my friend.

Jeff, It's a KHnutbuster. Kerry's version of a Sodbuster. with his dyed and jigged bone. Thanks for the nice comments.

As a fellow fat guy I can relate to your preference of a smaller profile knife. I like my knives to ride relatively unnoticed in my pocket until I need them. I also prefer single blades for dirty work...either in the yard or in the kitchen, but that is primarily a maintenance issue. A good blade is a good blade, If I'm planning on getting dirty I'll pocket an opinel or a sodbuster. But if I'm looking to whittle away the afternoon, the more blades the better.

Hope you're feeling better soon, brother. I was playfully asking myself this question recently: how is it you can carry a modern folder (Spyderco, Benchmade) everyday and have no issues w/ just a single blade, but somehow when you switch to carrying a traditional it's a mystery how in the world you manage to get ANYTHING done with JUST a single blade? I suppose having multiple blades lets one enjoy the full historical "experience" of any particular pattern, but it certainly isn't necessary just to "cut stuff."

I have to say that one of the reasons I like to have a second (or third) smaller blade on a knife, or a smaller knife to hand, is simply because of the stupid UK knife laws and the public hysteria about knives. Multi-blade knives look less 'tactical', and if I need to use my knife in a public place I can just use the pen, which either won't be seen by others or at least gives the impression I'm carrying a much smaller knife A shame such factors have to even be considered.

I like multiblade knives but I prefer single bladed ones because they are centered and not offset during use and the other blade can be uncomfortable at times depending on the use.

I normally carry a Cattle pattern. 3 5/8" - 4 1/4" when at the farm and a Baby Cattle when at home. My Baby Cattle needed some repair and I put this Erickson in my pocket. I carried it 3-5 days a week for the better part of 2 months and found I could do anything with it I could do with my 3 blade Baby Cattle. I prefer the blade selection of a 3 blade knife for assorted tasks but the single blade will get you through just fine.:)

It seems like the vast majority of my single blade knives have locks. Here are a few.

Think of it also as something TLARbb is so generously giving away, as per his thread here (giveaway ends June 1, 2013). :)

Sarah,

I changed the end date to June 2 because I always end my give aways on Sunday nite.

As far as single blade knives go, I tend towards single blade models most of the time, and find that I rarely use the others on a multi blade knife.

I am forced to admit that there are some cutting jobs that really require a smaller pen blade. So, I have my cake and eat it too. Single blade Opinel in the RFP and Micra in the LFP.

Worked on opening my uncles camp and some plastic trim had come off a door and needed to be reinstalled. When it came off, it bent part of the plastic and needed to be trimmed in order to fit back into place. The pen blade on the Micra worked perfectly for this. An Opinel, even a #6, would have been too much blade.

I have really enjoyed my single bladed knives for their slimness. When I start looking for a new knife, the single blade is a high priority. If I am looking at a GEC, more than one blade is a deal breaker for me. They have taken the single blade pocketknife to a new level for me.

I used to have more single blade knives than multi-blade ones but that has flipped around in the past year or so. Not sure why other than the natural come-and-go nature of things. It's nice to have more than one blade handy but there is something about a well executed one blade pattern that sings out.

I'm digging this super simplistic, but utilitarian Aitor Castor at the moment. It's some sort of mystery carbon steel, but it takes and holds a grand edge.

I was just thinking about this when going from jeans to shorts. I carry more single bladed knives in the summer for some reason, it could be the weight or slimness in the pocket I guess. I usually prefer a stockman too, but in summer it's a single blade with a SAK Huntsman in a belt pouch, and occasionally a Mercator, or Opinel #8 in a cargo pocket.

This one sees lots of pocket time:

as does my Northwoods ebony Indian River jack, and a Case/Bose Lanny's Clip.

This one arrived at the end of summer last year, I carried it a lot until it was too cold for shorts. It came back out today:

My present EDC is my #6 Opinel. It is so light that I often find myself checking to see if it is really in my pocket. As far as having only one blade, I only use one blade at a time.:D Seriously though, my favorite knife and the one I have the most of is the stockman. Even when I carry one of them, I find that I only tend to use one blade out of the bunch. I usually use the spade blade for normal EDC uses. Psychologically probably to keep the other blades sharp and un used for other (???) purposes should the need arise. Strange how we develop our habits and preferences.

Blessings,

Omar

What is that Case??!! Back pocket with spear? Me rikey!

Ahhh found it! I always thought the back pocket would look better with a broader blade. Does that have enough belly in it?
