VA Veteran's Choice program

Thanks Dave, I really appreciate it!

I don't think I qualify. I have a National Defense medal and Global War on Terrorism, but I was never deployed. I spent most of my time in Okinawa... I'd feel really strange being around guys that were WWII and Vietnam and the younger guys that actually went to the sandbox. I get enough from the VA, I'm lucky to have that.

Dan, I don't know about the VFW, but check out the American Legion. You don't have to have been deployed overseas to qualify for the Legion, just have to have served during certain periods of time. I'm sure you qualify there.

And for that matter, Okinawa IS overseas, so you should qualify for the VFW as well. My brother-in-law was in Germany during the Viet Nam era and he qualified for the VFW based on that overseas service even though he never went to 'Nam. I don't qualify because I was with the 101st Airborne Division at Ft. Campbell, Kentucky 1962-1964. Even though those years qualify during the Viet Nam era, I never went "overseas" any place. (We came close to going to Cuba during the missle crisis, but didn't get out of Florida:D). My service qualifed me for the American Legion, but not the VFW.

I had a VFW membership. All I really remember was dollar beers and Jaeger shots. I was infantry... 1/502 INF 101st ABN, Mosul 03-04.

You do have to have been deployed to a combat zone not just overseas to qualify for the VFW main membership, however you can also join the mens auxiliary and still will have the help from the service officer. The American legion can also help we do quite a few joint things with them. They should also be able to give you a hand with the bureaucracy of the VA and getting any help you need.

This really is wonderful information and I will pass it on. Thanks for sharing! I am sorry you had an unpleasant time.
