vacuum pump i purchased

That should work, but watch out with that kind. You're going to need to add oil almost every time you run it.

hooray--i need to add motor to the pump -- what kind does it take? Ariels way seems the easiest, i cant wait to try it. has anyone tried ariels way--after its stabilized adding any type of oil--teak,tung etc--is useles right?-marekz

Marekz,
The vacuum pump has a 1/3HP motor built in the unit.

Mike,
I am not sure how many vacuum pumps you have used in your 15 years, but in my 60,I have used many. Vacuum oil is very viscous, and only needs to be topped up as needed. A good new unit will not need daily oil filling.

Stacy: I have an oil less kind, because I got two for $10. I just read about the HF version of that kind is you had to top off about half of the tank every use. I guess it depends on how long each use lasts.

Marekz,
That looks like a nice pump. I think you got an excellent deal. My pump is similar and was more than $300. Use a good refrigeration oil and the pump should last for years.

Mike,
I used to work as a pipe fitter. We used this type of pump to pull a vacuum on refrigeration systems before adding the refrigerant. Sometimes the pump would run for more than a day. We never had a pump that required adding a half of tank of oil after each use.

I don't consider Harbor Freight to be a good source for tool information. You can probably get better information from a quality tool manufacturer.
