Vacuums

Got a few Oreck retail stores in my city, and the old man himself used to do a lot of advertizing. One day, I stopped for some Mexican food, and ambled into the Oreck next door. A quick test-drive had me convinced, and I bought one for the Mrs. Once she she let her mother use it, we had to get HER ONE, LOL. Once I divorced, then I had to get one for myself!

They require only a bit more physical effort than a Fuller crumb-broom! At just 8lbs, there's no 'exercise' involved in vaccuuming your home. ONce in a while, I pull or cut out all of the hair that seems to bind the 'broom' in the head, but that's about it.

The newer design on my new Shop-Vac can be used as a bagless, bagged -coarse], bagged [fine] or wet/dry, good improvement !! It'll work fine for me.

I bought a Dyson about ten years ago (the original Animal) and was very happy with it. When it finally died I wanted to replace it with another, but when I looked at them it seemed the build quality has taken a nose dive. Maybe they're just as good a machine, but the newer models seemed cheaply made. After researching and asking around, I settled on a Miele S7260. It cost a little more than the Dyson, but comes with a 7 year warranty on the motor. So far I've been very happy with it. I actually like the fact it has a bag. Every time I emptied the Dyson, no matter how careful I was, some dust floated out of the trash can.

I've had good luck with Oreck and Dyson, Orecks are easy to rebuild. 30 years ago, I had a Silver King, heavy monster, canister. Very good quality, wet/dry, but you needed earplugs to use it...

I have two Dirt Devils. The up right with the beater bar for carpets is 7 years old and runs every 2nd or 3rd day around here and is rock solid. I just change the filter once a year and wash it in between and the dirt bin is easy to empty. This machine runs quiet, clean and the beater bar belt has not needed replacement yet, whereas on my old commercial Clarke machine I would have to change the belt every year.

Then I have the red Dirt Devil for bare floors. It roars like the turbine on a 737 on take off. Its not so pleasant to use, lots of decibels, good suction, but the exhaust tends to blow the dust around in confined areas. Solid machine, but I have had better ones in the past.

Wet and dry or cyclonic. I like vacuums that maintain their suction and are bagless. I also prefer something using around 1800W but the noise can be a problem.

I did installs for central vac units some years ago and if I was to drop serious coin on a vacuum that's probably the route I would go. Central vacs have serious suction power. Otherwise a backpack HEPA would be a great choice.

Do any central vac systems have beater bars(brushes)? My parents have one but it's supplemented with a normal vacuum for this reason.
