Value knives that are a cut above?

K ktataragasi I love the Native. Here's my combo edge in DLC. It fills the hand nicely and the lockback on this one has a really reassuring and solid click. It's a great knife. Ive always rotated between a Delica and a Native for edc. To be honest I think the Manix 2 lw, Native, Para 3 LW, Endura, Delica, Caly 3.5, Centofante are all kind of interchangeable. They all fill the pocket about the same, they all make for great EDCs.

That said I looove my Dogtooth! @Mako109 what a great edc!

The Native is a fine knife too! It’s a tad too small for my taste, but it’s great for EDC.

Thanks to all who have posted. Hopefully others will continue to post some cool and interesting little gems.

Yeah I keep thinking of the Para 3 LW but something seems to stop me.

Is there a reason you don't like the Native 5 as a lockback option? That one has intrigued me also.

Thanks for the detailed response. I keep thinking on a Manix LW.

I only want to own one spyderco and don't really want to get a bunch of models of any one brand. I don't know why but that's just my strange thing...

What model would you recommend more as an edc role?

The Manix LW is a solid choice man. It’s one of the larger EDC options that still carry well. Plus, it’s made in the USA and one of the more reasonably priced Spydercos. If you have your mind set on this already, I suggest pulling the trigger.

For Cold Steel EDC, perhaps the folder that best fits that role is either the Code 4 or the American Lawman. Both have a 3.5” blade, come in S35VN, and have a rather stiff back lock, so be mindful of that. Both are tough as nails.

If you don’t mind a back lock that’s a bit harder to disengage than usual, feel free to explore Cold Steel’s folders.

Too many choices. Pick one

This is a 3.9" blade, and the burl wood has that shimmery chatoyance that gives the pattern depth that shifts around in the light. For a big knife with wood + CF scales with a bronze colored clip and pivot ring, IMO this Bestech Ascot punches above its weight at $108:

That thing just made it on the top of my next list. I love big folders and burl. Nice to find a mashup of those things. Thanks for posting this.

K ktataragasi at the end of the day if you happen to be a knife nut but...you don't want a million knives just lying around, I can see why you want to be super careful. We're all kinda idiots in that any of these knives could be our one knife for a decade and it would just be fine.

I tell this story a lot. My brother loooves high end everything. He bought a $400 AR lower once and proceeded to add another $1,600 of stuff onto it, lol. His cruisers that he trades in every 4 years or so are usually the $20k and up versions. Growing up in the 80s when he got his first real job in the real world he bought a model year '87 Grand National, proceeded to put a stage 3 kit in it and began going to Englishtown NJ to eat Corvettes. That said I bought the guy a Protech Godson for his bday bc he carries too, I told him to whip out his 10 year old $40 Boker AK74 and to throw it out as it was beat to hell. He takes out his knife and looks at me like I shot his puppy and refused my gift. Lol.

Long story short, there's never going to be the most perfect knife or just one knife to rule them all if you are that kinda guy. The knife that you pick is going to be a rough compromise of hand feel, blade steel, blade length, weight, thickness and preferred deployment method. In terms of opening, Spyderco lockbacks open as well as any other Spyderco, they're going to be thinner than other Spydercos so they work as great EDCs. They don't close as easy and don't have fidget factor to their form. Otherwise just get an Endura or a Delica and stop there.

That ^ notwithstanding. Oh and the Native is a little short in hand, but its thicker and has great handfeel and that's its saving grace. It feels better in hand than a Delica, it's kinda Techno size if the Techno was skinny which it's not. The Para 3 LW, if you like FRN, I personally love it because you can throw it around and it stays true to just being a basic work knife is to me the very pinnacle of all the great things that Spyderco has done up to now. It has like a bunch of features stuffed into a LW vesion of one of its other knives. As I said I didn't like the G10 version and I had the fancy pants Rex45 version of the regular Para 3. I love the LW and think its the penultimate regular everyday carry. It's a compromise, it could be longer, yes. The steel could be better yes. It could be G10 but then it would be heavier. Instead what it is is a great all around knife and these are the knives that I find that I actually keep and use. If my CRK is lying around I will use it.

But more often than not I usually grab a sub $125 Spyderco. I've learned mostly that these are my favorite knives and I've ventured into Bob Dozier Customs, some other midtechs here and there like Three Sisters and Olamic but none of that fit my uses. I'm a cut up some boxes and do some yard work and gardening kinda guy. I don't make any bones or have any fantasies about what I use or would use a knife for. It's why I don't have many fixed blades anymore because I only go camping like once a year.

If you need a larger blade the Manix 2LW uses BD1n steel too it takes up a bit more room in the pocket but has super flattish scales so it hides it well. If you have bigger hands the Manix 2 lw would be a great choice. To date the Manix 2LW and the Para 3 LW and Wharncliffe Delica are my favorite Spydercos and I've bought, traded and sold a hell of a lot of them from Domino's sprint Millis, sprint Para 2s to 5 different Sages etc...just like everyone else on the board who loves Spyderco. It's my favorite brand bar none.

Edit here's a link to 3 side by side photos of the Manix and Para 3 LW

As long as a gap between the wood and the CF doesn't bother you I highly recommend it. The action on mine is so good that I had to over tighten the pivot a bit to avoid freefall on closing it, and it fires hard every time. Feels good in hand and 14C28N is fine steel for the money. I think it's the rounded handle slabs that does it for me but it's one of my favorite large folders at the moment. My top four ~4" blade folders to carry right now would be (in no particular order) the Olamic Rainmaker, the ZT 0454, the CKF MILK and this ~$100 Bestech. Clearly I have a type; they're all relatively light and narrow in the pocket for large knives.

Here are a few that just happened to be handy:

Buck112, Kershaw Dividend M390, Ruger LCK

WE Rustic Gent is pretty nice too
In my opinion, CRKT is terrible. I only have experience with a couple of them, but they do not take a very sharp edge. This is just how I do it but when a knife can shave my arm, I'm done sharpening it. I've not been able to achieve this level of sharpness with any CRKT so I think there is something wrong with them.

My recommendation is: Cold Steel

I’ve found the kershaw link in 20CV to be a pretty good buy and a sturdy blade.

I don't really have access to all the great knives you do in the US but;

Cold Steel
Kizer
Ruike
Varusteleka
Wood Jewel and numerous other Finnish/Scandi companies who use Lauri blades
Brisa
The Lionsteel M4, M5 and M7 although not cheap are ime excellent value.

Hey! Thanks for being back this 2020 thread!

I will say I think that the budget knife game has changed in a huge way since then. The materials that are coming out at under $100 now is pretty amazing.

I will say I think that Kizer is one of my favorite budget brands. While they are out of China they seem to really enjoy what they do and try new things all the time.

I often say that we are in a time where knife enthusiasts are almost drowning in an embarrassment of riches.

For instance, check this sucker out. The overall design and handle profile are very benign and neutral, it isn't the prettiest shaped thing in my house by any means. However, the micarta is great, the grind shames any Benchmade and most Spydercos I've had, and it's got the kind of lockbar feel that screams 'perfectly executed' to me.

This is just one of a number of superb value minded knives to come out recently, but I think it's head and shoulders above the competition. Sub-$60 Kizer Domin, 154CM20220703_123139.jpg20220703_123253.jpg20220703_123117.jpg20220703_124756.jpg

Reminds me of the QSP Penguin which is another great knife. Knives plus had a steal on them in M390 a while back and I picked one up.
