How much value will a Damascus blade add to a limited production (not custom) knife?

Would it double or triple the value ?

Thanks for the input .

Regards , Cameron .

I am not an expert on production knife values, but as a collector of custom damascus knives I can tell you that the damascus alone will not increase the value by that great a margin (two or three times). In Chris Reeve Sebenza's for example, the price goes up some for damascus, but it does not add multiples to the cost of the knife. The increase in value will depend mostly on the value of the knife without damascus blades and whether the damascus in question is worth paying more.

Im also far from an expert, but have noticed that in general custom makers and production companies do charge a great deal more for a damascus blade. Whether it pays off in the long run I don't know, but the makers and companies sure get extra money at the time of purchase :)

I don't own any damascus knives right now, and the only one I am plan on purchasing is the Cold Steel Imperial Tai Pan. Purchasing that knife is solely based on me loving the knife, not thinking of collector's value.

Looking forward to seeing more replies this from some more experienced collectors....

Some Damascus can add a lot of value...Mostly because of the work and authorship added to the creation of the blade...

If I use Damasteel instead of BG-42, I'll charge you the difference plus some extra because I may not keep the size I need in stock, i.e. as a special order...

If I make the Damascus to order or create a special pattern, I'll ask a lot more to help pay for the additional work and waste involved, this would seem only fair...How much is 20 hours of your time worth? :)

Some pattern welded steel made currently is heading toward a high art...If you are collecting art only you can determine the value...

The good new is that plenty of good working Damascus in being made, like the work of Ed Caffery, with a fully hardenable mix of 1084 and 15n20...This steel is a pleasure to use and look at!

At least part of the answer to your question would depend upon whether the knife in question was a folder, or a full tang fixed blade. This is the case for sure when the damascus was purchased from someone like Devin Thomas. He charges a significant sum by the inch for his damascus. For FBs, every inch of the tang adds x amount to the material cost of the knife. On average, would say that a tang adds well over $100. A maker wouldn't be fair to himself/herself if that cost wasn't passed along to the customer.

Not too long ago, I read something, probably on Shop Talk forum, about the cost of a knife blade made from ATS34. I'm sure I bookmarked it, but haven't the time to search for it now. (Someday, will learn the search function of bookmarks on my browser, and at least occasionally exhibit the illusion of efficiency.) Point is, am fairly certain that it was below the cost of 1" of Devin Thomas damascus. So, if 4-5" of damascus was used, even for a folder blade, you're talking $100 +/- for material costs. Of course that has to be reflected in the price.

I would hazard a guess that in the case of the bladesmiths, that damascus might not add so much to the cost as for a maker who buys his damascus. The smith is going to be forging steel, whatever the nature of the blade material. I'm sure that his damascus costs are higher than say 52100, but not so significantly higher than the difference between ATS34 and DT damascus.
