I have just got info on this steel has anyone got any experiance with it? Is it good for forgeing blades from? Specs and pr. as follows.
C 1.5 Si 1.0 Mn 0.4 Cr 8.0 Mo 1.5 V 4.0
speced as:
High wear resistance
High compresive strength
Very good through-hardening
Very good toughness
Resists chipping
Hardening as pre heat 1110-1290 F
Austenitising 1800-2010 F
Quench as Vacuum high speed gas
Martempering bath 390-660 F
The only thing that the rep new is that it has more wear resistance and is tougher than D2.
Help Please

That steel sounds like it would be better for stock removal it doesn't have as much chrome as D2, but I'll bet it is realy tough to forge. If you like to forge D2 it might be alright,IMHO there are better steels for forging.

You don't mention annealing rate. Do you have to anneal it in an oven?

The Annealing rate speced is 1650 F cooling 20 F per hour. It sounds like a air hardening steel to me but I'm not sure. I am looking for someone that has used it. Its avaliable to me from stock in western Canada for $12.00 Canadian per lb. but its only avaliable in round bar starting at 3/4 in.or flat bar starting at 1/2 in. Its properties sound interesting as I like D2 but not nessesarly for forging. It is a tool steel.

I don't have my books on hand and i may be wrong, but to me the composition of this stuff looks much like the old Vasco Wear alloy. If so, it can be forged, as explained by Karl Schroen and Jim Hrisoulas in their books.

if its vascowear it makes an EXCELLENT knifeblade...rusts (pits is more like it) readily....everything you want to do to it should be done BEFORE heat treat....and even then it is VERY hard to work....WORK HARDENS VERY READILY-DO NOT GET IT HOT WHILE YOU ARE GRINDING IT- I am not kidding....

Achim, Tom
Can you compair it to Vasco Wear and pass on any forging tips as I do not have any of these books. Sounds more and more like it is air hardening. As I will be forced to forge it there will be minimal shaping to do on the grinder more scale removal and cleanup than anything, and a full aneiling cycle after forging is SOP.
I do all my heat treating in salts so clean up after treating can be more or less washing and polishing, do you sugjest that I take it to final grit 800-1000 before heat treating Tom?
The rusting comment has me worried even with 8.0 Cr. Is it more rustable than 5160 or 52100?

It is a powder steel, wich the maker recomends for knives
