Tom, I do get a lot of sparks, but very little if any smoke. I normally use my half dull 50 grit belts to do the initial shaping of my liners. I run my grinder at about 40% power.

Are you saying I need to slow it down? My knifemaking is so slow now, I'm almost going in reverse. ;^)
