Vancouver, BC Laws in Carrying Knifes

In my experience this country(Canada) Is really good at turning law-abiding citizens into criminals. It's total BS. :grumpy:

My understanding from reading the Court ruling on the case of the inmate using a shank when attacked was as follows:

It is not illegal (dangerous to public peace clause) to arm yourself against a defined threat. This means that if you have been recieving threats of physical harm, it would be okay to carry a legal weapon for self defense (I guess within a reasonable period).

However, it is not acceptable to carry a weapon in anticipation of an unknown and unforseen assualt ("I've got a knife to mess up anyone who attacks me"). This was the case of the inmate, as he did infact always carry the shank prior to the threats.

I think the whole "you're likely to get yourself killed by your own knife" mentality is absolutely insane. We're talking about mostly about petty thugs here, how many do you think are trained in disarming a person? Keep a grip on your knife and dont let the bastard take it. Now, if you live in a place full of martial artists, cops, and retired military that enjoy mugging people, maybe a knife is a bad idea, since they are trained in disarming an armed person. Call me insane if you wish, but if I found myself in a situation like ANGRYMOB's, I would have drawn whatever weapon I had, be it a pistol or a knife, before the conflict turned physical.

Don't get me wrong. I am for self-defence and believe people should have the right to arm themselves. I also have no problem using a knife as a last resort weapon, or improvised weapon to defend my life. But my main point is that if you are thinking ahead for self-defence, and arming yourself in preparation, there are far better choices than a knife (unless you are a trained knife fighter). I also think that a knife can easily hurt you more than it can help you in a fight (legally as well), perhaps more so than other weapons, or improvised weapons.

Yeah there are way better choices. but how many 13 year olds can get a hold of them? I carry a 7 inch combat knife and don't really have a decent excuse for if they stop me. It's not in plain view or anything so I'm just wondering if I'm legal?

Your right. by now everyone must have heard it "your more likely to hurt yourself than the attackers" HOW? are they going to grab your hand and kill you with your own knife? no, there is a remote chance that they will know how to disarm you but its like winning the lottery. it just doesn't happen.

I carry my pocket knife witch is an army edition folding knife i carry it because my girlfriend bought it for me. It stays clipped on my pants usually but would that still be able to be called a utulity piece?

Depends on how its usually handled by the leos and the courts.
Technically they can not prove that you are not using your 7 inch long combat blade only to cut your apples, trim your grandmas apple trees or work on carpets and cardboard boxes.
However some people go by what the knife was advertised as. A name like "taliban take down" knife is kind of obvious.
Other countries have concrete laws on what a combat knife looks like and what is not allowed...
To get the best information it would be good to check law cases from your country and then conclude from there what can get you in trouble and what is less likely to get you in legal trouble.
Of course even if legally you would be fine at the end, doesnt mean that a leo couldnt make your life interesting if he is not aware of how a certain law is to be interpreted.
