Vanguard in BG-42?

I just bought this Vanguard that was listed as having a BG-42 blade. The blade has no markings indicating what type of steel is used. The seller said that he got the info off the Buck catalog, but I can't find it.

Could one of you steel experts take a look at the listing and tell me what you think? I don't know if I got what I paid for or not.

I would appreciate it.:)

It would be stamped bg-42 if thats what it was made of.
Generally speaking, if the blade does not say what kind of steel it is, then it is made of our current production steel...420hc.
The listing does not show the backside of the blade, which is where the bg-42 stamp could be located.

The back side of the blade is blank, nothing on it at all. The seller says he got the info from the catalog, but I don't know what catalog he's refering to.

Thanks for the info, Joe.

Unfortunately I had the same problem. That knife has a 192-BO-B right? (or something close)

Buck did have a build out of both versions with a Burlwood handle last year. One had 420HC (yours) and one had BG-42.

The Bg one is stamped as such. I would send it back ;)

He did list it wrong. These knives have created a bit of confusion! Mine actually came in the right box, and the knife was gorgeous, but the only reason I bought it was to get the BG-42. Good luck, I hope it all works out for you!

I think the same guy has another one listed. It is probably wrong as well.

I have some of these and they are stamped BG-42 and a couple of them are stamped master series bg-42,

If you look on ebay there is a guy who has 2 burl wood and 2 cocobola vanguards that are bg-42 he doesn't have it in the auction title but it is in
his description.

Plum,

I see your seller has the same Burl Vanguard as your's but for $80. Maybe that's the BG-42 one. I'd ask him about it.

I messaged that seller and asked him if the blade was stamped BG-42. He had a one word reply....

NO

I stated in my note that it is not BG-42 unless it was stamped.

Perfect! He is being a real "male member". I would have kept it, but he was so rude about it, I've filed a dispute and it's been escalated to a claim.

Well, I just got an e-mail from PayPal. I'm to return the Vanguard for a full refund. I'll bet that guy is just beside himself. Now I just have to decide if I really want to go to the trouble. I don't think $65 plus $5 shipping was a bad price for the burlwood handle model even if it's just the standard steel.

Any opinions?

I just did the dispute because he was such a jerk about it and I wanted to teach him a lesson.:D

That does seem like a fair price for what it is.
I also asked that same seller if it was stamped and sent him Joe's comment. He changed the auction description to say the knife wasn't stamped. He's also caught in a spot because the dealer he bought the knives from told him they were BG42. So, not entirely his fault. And he was very cordial with me. Sorry you got caught in what I think is all to common on eBay and that's small fry trying to retail items with info from less than honest wholesalers/dealers.

Question is, can you buy that Burl for the same money or less elsewhere?... and the hassle factor of returning it.

well, you opted for filing a claim and probably did right, but actually you should have inquired about the blade marking before buying the knife like I did. I spotted this seller's knife 10 days ago and asked him about the steel, whether it is marked on the blade, the seller replied: "can not give you piture right now waiting on a order of knifes will not be here untill the jan, 30th you can email me then if still interested." After that I firmly decided to not buy it.
there is one more seller on the ebay that has a BG42 (as he claims it to be) Vanguard with Burl handle for around $90. The pic is blury. I'm pretty sure it's not a BG42 Vanguard either.

As far as I'm concerned, when a seller specificly says that the item is something, I don't feel the need to question them about it. The guy came off as such a jerk when I did ask about it after receiving it, I decided to file the dispute. He escalated it to a claim immediately and lost. I decided that it's not worth my time and expense to send it back for a refund, I'm just going to let the claim expire in however long that takes. If he had simply been civil to me afterwards, he wouldn't be sitting there now with PayPal holding his money.

I think I would have kept also for the price you got it and the extra cost of having to send it back.

I figure most all of us have bought something with a vague or bad description before. I know I sure have. Maybe I have been too trusting of people.

but at least no one here has ever given me a spanking afterwards when I have talked about my experiences.

Oh,,,Welcome to the Buck Forum Avion!

"I think I would have kept also for the price you got it and the extra cost of having to send it back."

Especially since for the next few weeks, I'll be working six days a week, from 6:30 AM (actually leave in the morning at 4:45AM) to 7PM, Sundays off. I have no one to send it back for me even if I decided I wanted to.

It's still a beautiful knife.

This exact question about this knife is what brought me to Blade Forums today. I knew I'd find the answer here :-)
