Vantage pro vs select

I already own a pro and love it to death, but a friend of mine loves my vantage so much i want to get him one for his birthday. I would assume my pro would hold and edge longer and stand up more to chips and things like that but im curious as to which would be more durable in terms of standing up to rust and things of that nature and help would be awesome.

Not much real difference except for bragging rights.

Flip a coin or do what feels the best.

:)

S30V will hold an edge longer, it is more difficult to sharpen. The scales of the pro are far superior in look and feel to the select.

I have found that the premium steels are not premium at all. The only advantage is the scales that come with the more expensive models. You should try to find a select with the diamond wood scales. They are a bit hard to find, but they are out there. You get the best of both worlds. Nice scales and the 420HC blade, which I find holds an edge and is rust resistant.

Now c'mon Matt, just because that's your "opinion" or "discovery" (of the steels being premium or not) doesn't mean that it's a fact. It's still only your opinion and one that's not universally shared. ;)

I said that's what I have found, and that's a bit more than an opinion. Weather it is universally shared or just an unreasonable critique, its a discovery I have found to be true with the applications I have used my Vantage in. I have found that the Pro model holds an edge but when it comes time to sharpen, one spends more time sharpening it to get the great edge back than if one would have used a "lower end" steel and had to sharpen it more frequently. Neither the S30V nor the 13C26 maintained their resistance to rust as well as the 420Hc when out for the day on the ocean. Both of the "premium" steels rusted while the 420Hc didn't. These are facts.

A discovery, such as the one I explained would lean more toward Fact rather than opinion. Take it or leave it. I just threw it out there for whatever its worth...

Thanks for clearing that up. It's what I said, your opinion and should be prefaced as such and not presented as an established fact.:)

I don't think you understand what I am saying. An opinion would be a comment without fact. I have made several comments and have provided factual information, that I have found to be true. Therefor it's not an opinion.

I understand completely. You seem to be under the impression that any conclusion (opinion) that you arrive at, even using your version of the facts, automaticly becomes indisputable.

I'm not arguing or disputing anything, I have simply stated an observation I made, sense I carry all three models on a day to day basis. I have found S30V more difficult to sharpen than 420Hc and it rusts quickly when fishing on the ocean. 13C26 rusts in as quick a time as S30V. I also found 13C26 only holds an edge for a short time longer than 420Hc. These are observations and not opinions. You may use your knives in different applications which prove contrary to my observations. I'm not trying to sell anything to anybody, merely share the experiences I have had using the steel blades in question.

FACT
something that actually exists; reality; truth: Your fears have no basis in fact.
2.
something known to exist or to have happened: Space travel is now a fact.
3.
a truth known by actual experience or observation;

I have no issue with the observation that you found rust on your blades after a day on the ocean. That I will accept as fact since I live 2 miles from the ocean and fish alot myself. What I do object to and still say is an opinion only, is that the fact that you found rust, that one is harder to sharpen and one only holds an edge a short time longer, disqualifies those steels as being premium.

440C is harder to sharpen than 420HC (as is S30V by your own admission) and most feel that makes it a better (premium) steel. You yourself state that the 13C26 hold an edge at least some longer than 420HC.

I'm not disputing your facts, just your conclusion (read opinion) which you present as fact.

Guess I just don't like blanket statements such as this which I qualify as opinion, even given the "facts":

"I have found that the premium steels are not premium at all."

I guess I find it hard to except the term "premium", when in my observation the higher priced steels have less rust resistance than the lower priced base stock material. In the other observations the "premium" steel (13C26) only holds an edge for a short/hardly noticeable time longer. In the third observation the difference in time that the premium (S30V) steel holds an edge is a wash with the extra time spent on sharpening, doesn't appeal to me as being premium.

Doesn't appeal to me as being Premium, is my opinion. Therefor, I have found that the premium steels are not premium at all

Why would you spend the money to buy a premium, upgraded product if the performance isn't there, and is more hassle than it's worth.

"Doesn't appeal to me as a Premium, is my opinion. Therefor, I have found that the premium steels are not premium at all"

There you go, you finally said it! I'm proud of you my boy!

OK Dave, your right. My statement is an opinion but the facts presented about the Premium steels not being premium is Fact.

See, that wasn't so hard now was it? ;)

Now back to Patricks question. If he's your best friend buy him the Pro, just a friend buy him the Avid and if he's just an aquaintance, get him one of the Selects. That's just MY opinion though.:)

Plumberdv...REALLY???!!!
You come across as a bully...making the guy bow down to you and all..
Thanks for your experience mbjannush. I understand exactly what you are saying...(without micro managing what you said). This is not a legal terminology class so I figured out what you meant very easily.
I got the jist...now can we get back on to the OP's question?

It's always a pleasure Dave;)

Patrick, I hope you were able to derive some help from my experiences. I'm sure your friend will appreciate anything you gift to him just because you cared enough to do so. Best of luck.

Justtheedge, thanks for your understanding.

Check out Jdavis882 review on Youtube of the select. He compares the 420HC to 154CM. And that guy knows his steel.
