Variable speed control device

I use a VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) on my bandsaw. It's a pretty good solution, but your grinder would need to be a 3 phase motor that the VFD converts to single phase....then controls the output.

If you're going the pulley route, you'll need 4 or 5 step, and Enco has them, so do a number of other places (McMaster Carr, MSC........)or you can go to a tractor supply place like John Deere or somewhere that sells and services riding lawnmowers. Just find out the bore size you need. The 4 - 5 step ones can be pricey though....

Not a lot of tractor supply places in hawaii... not too many tractors.
I guess I can check an auto store but I doubt that they would have step wheels, maybe only the belts.
I sent an email to the enco staff and see what they have. I will have to extend the shaft but that shouldnt be too hard.

Hey I got my step pullleys from the local Ace Hardware store. I would start checking those type stores. The pulleys are a common use item.

The time and money you spend trying to fix up this sander would better be used to make a few knives and buy a real grinder. Your grinder is not set up for too many modifications. You could try the HF router control but no guarantee it would work. You need either a 2x72 or 2x48 with either a DC or 3ph AC and VFD.You can get speed controllers for AC but you are talking BIG bucks.

The best and cheapest option would be the pulley system as on a drill press. Harbor freight piece is like a dimmer and when you crank it down you also lose power which means torque which means horsepower.

I am no electrical wizard but my buddy is and he explained the ins and outs to me (which I did not completely understand) but the idea is that you do not want to sacrifice power for a lower speed.

Oops, I didn't even note your location........

Try a hardware store, or a lawnmower repair place. There's a number of places that will carry them.

Try an electric motor repair shop. Or, check grainger online if they have what you need and see if it's in stock locally.

Take care, Craig
