Anyone out there try a router speed controller from harbor freight? I was thinking of hooking it up to my 1x42. I bought a viel grinder for sharpening and figured it would be awesome to slow down the speed to strop. Any thoughts?

so long as you understand when you slow down a single phase AC motor that way you also gut the torque but for stropping...

That's a bummer. Any good ideas out there? Or do I not woody about it and use it full speed. Plan to use 220, 360, and some linen or leather stripping belts.

Also, "veil grinder"?

I'm guessing you are using a smart phone with auto-correct :) Best to proof read your posts or use a real keyboard.

You want to go up to 400 grit belts at the minimum. A good set of basic belts is 120, 220, 400 grit.
Stropping belts in leather or cloth are NOT a good idea for that grinder....or for most grinders. Strop by hand.

When you get ready for it, build/buy a 2X72 grinder and either use a multi-pulley or VS.

not so smart phone. The 1 x 42 is going to be dedicated to final edge. I've been using a Kalamazoo upright to set my angle with 220 and a 40 micron belt and then pulling burr by hand on a used 40 micron belt. A final hand strop with leather and green compound. Hoped i could get it done faster with a dedicated set-up. Thought id set up the Veil on the horizontal. Maybe marking a smaller drive wheel would slow it down enough?
