Variable speed grinder, now what?

OK, I sprung for a Bader III grinder, and I love the versatility. I have a 2 hp variable speed DC motor. Can anyone direct me to a tutorial or information on what speeds to run for particular belts? I guess I'm trying to minimize heat build-up, efficiently grind, and minimize belt wear. Any advice appreciated.

Hi Phil congrats on the new arrival! Where are our cigars..?:D

There's really no rules or facts for speeds and I think it will become more of a personal preference.

Run coarse grits as fast as you dare. But slow down enough to match the required control with the task. If you are just recklessly hogging away material...run full bore...but if you are doing something important and delicate...then by al means...SLOW DOWN.

Use slower speeds with finer grits. Finer grits imply lower material removal rates and finer finishes...so speed is not important.

Use slower speeds to control heat..not only in metal but all materials.

Use slower speeds with your small wheel attachment. Don't over speed those little wheels...you can damage them in a heart beat. Using small wheels is delicate work so slow speeds are in order anyway.

When in doubt, run slower...and increase the speed as you become more experienced and confident.

Your common sense and shop-smarts will be your best guide. If your presentation grade mammoth is smoking from heat...then you're probably too fast.

Have fun with the new machine!

Thanks for the advice. I do feel like I should pass out cigars as muscling the thing onto the work bench must be akin to giving birth. I'm still getting used to the Bader III, but it's the operator not the equipment that is the limiting factor.
