I finally got my 2 motors (2hp, 3 phase, 1725rpm, TEFC)

Single phase power going to the vfd, 3 phase power going to the motors. One or two control box for the 2 motors (belt sander and disk sander).

your gonna love the variable speed... i'm shocked at how handy it is...

not only that... i noticed that the slow grinding doesn't throw dust all over the shop... it falls close to the grinder..

also ..its nice not to worry about over heating the steel and risking the temper..

I have had two belt grinders with variable frequency drives for about ten years. I believe they are overrated. If a belt speed of say 2500 ft. p. min. is set up mechanically , I believe it will accomplish the same job. Hey, please tell me why I need to go faster or slower, I like learning useful things. Thanks. Frank
 
Just one problem: The VFD enclosure is vented. You'll need to clean it out frequently or risk having it short out or overheat. They list the same VFD in a NEMA 4 enclosure for $351.
 
Yeah, make sure the VFD is in a very clean area, or that it is in a clean box that is filtered to allow air movement. I'm sure that is something you've thought of.

Frank, I'm used to a very fast direct drive grinder, so the ability to slow down is a HUGE deal for me. It will allow me more precision control and hopefully a better fit and finish in the long run. Then you can crank the belt speed up to hog material quickly, and with just a flick of the fingers, you can slow it down to whatever crawl you want to so a precision detail area.

Yes, the VFD will be away from the grinders. And on top it will be in a ventilated box with filters.

Let us know how that VFD works. It is a very attractive price. I have a AC Tech that is about $50 more than the one you are using. I have been thinking of building a variable speed disk sander.

You will love the VFD!
