Variable speed setup for KMG

I am slowly gathering the parts I need for my first real grinder to replace HF 1"x30". I have decided to go with a variable speed KMG. Currently I am limited to 110V solution. So far I have KBAC-24D, 1 HP 3-phase Baldor - both from ebay and work perfect together. KMG is the next item on my shopping list. I have several questions about setting up the KMG. On this picture there is a VFD bracket that holds a VFD on a base plate. This bracket is not listed in available part list and I will not be getting the base plate, so what do you guys suggest for mounting the VFD and have a layout similar to the one Rob has on that picture?
Another question is a workbench or stand for a grinder. I consider using Universal Tool Stand from HF with 3/4" plywood on top. I am not sure is that stand sturdy enough for this application. Have anyone used that stand with a grinder? Are there better stands or sets of legs that I could use instead?

Any advises and pictures of your KMG setups are appreciated.

P.S. I do not weld :( so I can not just buy some metal and fabricate the bracket and the stand...

The stand would be sturdy enough but not high enough,my bench is 36" high for my KMG.Better to build a small bench from 2x4 and 3/4" plywood. It only need to be about 2'X3'. Also give Rob a call and he will probally sell you the VFD holder.

Thank you, Stan. I overlooked that HF stand is not hight enough. I will look for simple workbench plans and try to build it myself.

Can be really simple. get 2-8' 4X4's and 3-8' 2X4,Cut the 4x4 to length the use the 2x4 to go around the outside top and middle, and cover with 3/4" plywood.

As far as the bracket goes, I just bent a piece of mild steel to make mine. You can sort of see it in the picture below.

Rob at Beaumont Metal Works is a very reasonable guy and seems surprisingly supportive of people who get the motor or other equipment separate from his kits.

I'd suggest e-mailing or even calling him - he'll steer you in a good direction.

P.S. The baseplate is VERY sturdy and was a good investment in making it easy to set the KMG up. If your motor works with the baseplate, I'd suggest getting it.

Chris, how thick is a steel you used for making a bracket? Does VFD vibrate when your grinder is running?
Tait, Robs plate fits 56 frame motors, mine is 143T.

Hi lel,

You can mount the VFD anywhere that is convinient...perhaps on the a front leg of your stand.

We don't really sell those KB brackets...we just give them away to guys that buy the base plate and VFD. We also include a baggie with electrical hardware for the hook-up.

Drop us a line if you want one of those brackets...we'll figure out a price. We've sold them before and I think it was around $20-$30.

I'm thinking that you are really going to like that motor and drive combo. After a while, you might want a bit more power because eventually you'll be pushing the 1 hp Baldor and the 1 hp 24D to it's limits on a regular basis.

If that happens, you can re-purpose this motor package into a nice VS disk set-up and go to 1-1/2HP on the KMG. This is stuff that you'll do down the road on a casual basis when you come across the right replacement motor.

Also, check your 143 motor to see if has provisions for 56 frame mounting holes. Some do so they are interchangeable.

Have fun with your project!

Hi Rob,
Thank you for the reply. I will contact you next month about the grinder, small wheel attachment, tooling arm rack and other accessories that are on my list, and I am definitely interested in that bracket.
