Variable Speed Specials, VFD

Tom, yes. They work by taking 220V single phase from your outlet, and converting it to three phase for the motor. You get all the benifits of a DC variable speed motor and control, without any loss of torque.

A friend just yesterday showed me a Surplus Center catalog that has some variable speed DC motors in the 1- 1.5 hp range that were originally made for treadmills, and some DC speed controllers set up to run off of 110- 115 volts. A 1 hp motor/controller setup can be had for less than a hundred bucks. It looks like a 1.5 hp motor needs a much beefoer speed controller and might rin $175.00 for both units. I'm kinda working on a grinder and was wondering if one of these set ups might work. It seems like a treadmill motor would be built to run under a good torque load for a reasonably long time. I'm not likely to grind for more than an hour at a time without taking a break.

What do you guys think?
