Variant report

Bronco:
Your review does my hart good, I made the decision to purchase a SH2E from Andy about a month and a half ago for the sole purpose of taking it to Alaska with me as my primary knife for the Sockeye and Coho salmon run in early August, your review confirmes what I already knew that my research paid off and I am getting the best possible knife for my once in a life time trip.

Thanks for the review Bronco

Kevin

Congrats Kevin, I know you've been kicking this purchase around for awhile, but I can promise that you won't be disappointed. You'll have to give us a report of your own once you've returned from Alaska.

That's a really sweet knife. I bet it would have handled the brambles far better than a...(different brand of knife) during some recent coastal excursions in Oregon. Now I'm really anxious to get the 6" when they're out

Strabs, I really like the look of that 6" model as well. Andy said it was the big attraction down in Atlanta. I think it's going to be the perfect size for a lot of folks.

Great report, Bronc! I really eanjoyed reading it...up until the point where you smacked that Variant on a rock

BTW, I filleted a 9" brookie with my Steel Heart II last weekend - look for my report in the next couple of days

Wulf,
Not to worry. I sure was bummed when I smacked that rock, but that feeling quickly passed when I looked at the edge and saw how well it had held up. Now you can hardly tell it ever happened, and when the time finally does comes to actually sharpen it (and not just steel it), the nick will disappear completely.

Once Jerry figures out how many backwoods fisherman are using his knives he may have to come out with the Steel Head II.

Steel Head II - Ha! I like that!

Speaking of trout... I don't own a Mean Street, but I'd suspect that, despite its relative thickness, it could probably double for a nice Bird & Trout knife and would handily bust through the stubborn backbones of those early season Steelhead!

Bronc, or any other salmonid anglers, I'd be curious to hear about your experiences with a mean street out on the river...

Wulf,
The Mean Street is a bit on the thick side for a trout knife...but hell, some of those western anglers swear they can clean a trout with a broken beer bottle! Me, I'd love to see a INFI bird and trout knife...must be these little eastern fish I catch!

Jerry and I have actually spoken about an INFI Bird and Trout Knife...sounds like a good AP Limited project..hmmmmmm

Speaking of fillet blades, last year during the food fishery here a lot of the cod were of a good size. At that time I remarked to my father that they were some of the largest I had ever seen. He remarked that they were small compared to the ones he used to catch about 40 or so years ago. They had to split the heads open with an axe (we eat the heads).

If Busse had been making the Battle Mistress then they could just have prepared the whole fish with that. No fillet knife + axe combo needed.

Andy, I'd be interested in something like a Busse Bird and Trout. Heck, I can even make an argument that it would be a nice all-around kitchen knife for myself and the wife...

Wulf, I actually prefer the taste to the fillet. I would rather the tongue over anything else. You need a lot of them to get a decent meal though.
