Here's a better picture of my now completed .20P upper

I am a bit of a nut about varmint hunting.... Here is one of a trusty Marlin 60

I know I have posted this picture before but since we are talking about handguns....

so, what cartridge presently gives the highest MV? last time i was following it was in the 70s. back then it was the 30-06 sabot .22 at 4,100 fps.

My .20 Practical reaches 4K quite easily with only 23.5 grains of 4198 and 32gr pills. 220 swift, 22-250, 5.56x42, 204 Ruger, .20 Tactical, .20-6.8, .20BR all are speed demons at and over 4K. I chose the .20P due to its inexpensive nature, ease of conversion for brass, ability to fit/function in an AR and it's exceptional barrel life combined with inherent accuracy.

way back the 22-250 was toned down to around 3,800. now it can do 4k, huh? probably the improved version. very accurate round.

Improved powders mostly. Cleaner and more efficient burning powders in recent years have improved older carts quite a bit.

But, if all you want it flat out speed, these two are hard to beat...

Yeah, the .204 is but Hornady uses a proprietary powder not available to the public, though from what I can tell CFE223 is similar. Mostly the .20 calibers are claiming the high speeds, though almost all of them are "roll your own" wildcats, some easier then others. The .20 Practical is about the easiest with just a neck down of 5.56/.223 brass, using a bushing .223 die and smaller bushings. Standard .223 seater works too. But, going to .20 cal means other support gear as well, like cleaning rod, jags for the cleaning rod (different thread pitch), patches, brushes, reloading equipment, etc.

The 26 Nosler seems to be a new mid caliber speed demon, but you gotta have big bucks to buy that ammo or even just brass!

Got 2 varmint "guns".

243 striker.jpg

243 Striker with 18" McGowan barrel, my stock. This is my "hobby" making custom stocks. This one is laminated cocobolo. Should be good for about an easy 500 yards.

22-250 Striker.jpg

This one is in 22-250. Custom feathery crotch walnut with sbony tips. Again, my design and build. For my close in work, say 350 yards and more.

Now if I just had more time for hunting, instead of working all the time.

No - that's a Howard Hill Halfbreed from Howard Hill Archery. The bows I've made look suspiciously like sticks with a bit of string. :D

That 243 striker is just gorgeous! Mighty fine job whittlin' that stock you did there.

I've been wanting a light weight mid caliber bolt gun again, something cheap and reliable, been seriously looking at Savage Axis in 243. I would prefer 6mmRem as my family has 4 and we are set up for reloading them already, but to buy a $300 gun and put a $300 barrel on it seems a waste.

Hopefully PSA will run that crazy cheap sale price again this year, they had them for under $250.
