Vaseline for knife care?

I'd stay away from Vasaline and from solvent cleaners such as Hoppe's. Most knife collectors use some form of paste wax. The best is Renaissance Wax (also called Ren Wax) which is a museum-grade preservative wax. It's non-abrasive, non-reactive, and safe to use on all materials, including steel, brass, stag and leather. However, it's also expensive and can only be bought from specialty suppliers. If you only have a couple of knives, I suggest you use a good quality, non-abrasive paste car wax.

Another suggestion - never store knives in their sheaths. Wrap each knife separately in a soft cloth or, better yet, buy an inexpensive zippered storage case.

This is my first post :o but to let you feel better, orings are made from different materials. Here is a link to show you which orings are fine with different types of fluids.

It doesn't state vaseline, but under Petroleum viton orings seem ok :)
It does actually, vaseline = petrolatum.

Also be sure that your blades are absolutely clean and dry when you apply mineral oil on them. At least the pharmacy grade "paraffin oil" I have doesn't cling well to tainted surfaces. The same should apply to vaseline as well, since they are pretty much the same stuff with different viscosity. Only with vaseline, as it is more rigid, you might not notice that youre just covering "wet" spots.

Why do you think its bad to use vaseline as a lube with condoms?

Because condoms are made of natural latex rubber that is not resistant
against vaseline (petroleum jelly).

But all rubber, plastics and synthetic materials that are based on mineral oil
should be resistant against vaseline. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Of course it can be sometimes difficult to determine whether the rubber
is based on latex rubber, on mineral oil or a combination of both.

Thats my point. Who knows what your orings are made of. Id use something that you know to be OK for whatever material your knife might contain.

Depends on the rubber compound that the oring is made of, as others have mentioned. Most manuf. recommendations I've seen state to use a silicone grease of some sort to lube/condition the o-rings. I use automotive silicone dielectric grease.

Eezox is where its at! Protects like nothing else I have ever tried and it is dry after applied. All my guns have eezox on them and no longer rust when hunting in rain.

Sounds like a good product, but it might be difficult to get Eezox in Germany.

Like many other knife care and maintenance products from US companies that
are often hard to find in German stores :(
