Hello!

Anyone else besides me get down to the Riviera for the Las Vegas Antique Arms and Custom Knife Show? I was down there Saturady (couldn't make it on Friday like I planned...) and spent some time looking around..Dropped by Dr Jim's table and he was pretty busy talking to folks about how to do stuff..other than that..I was looking for supplies and my jaw dropped when I saw the prices on stag antler....

There were some nice knife, even the good Dr had some really good looking stuff, that one Germanic sword knocked my socks off as far as the pattern in the blade goes...

So anyone else go>???

Yes....I was there on Fri. and there were some other local guys there too. Good stuff and good people.....I had a nice visit with Dr. Jim (if I'm thinking of the same guy). He was very friendly, and man he knows his stuff!!!

Too late SS , this show is dead. It is really sad what was once a good show is no longer. Having it the same weekend as SHOT was not a great idea on the promoters part , and don't even think of trying to get the promoter to tell you who all had tables prior to the show ( I asked for that info the last couple years and it never arrived ).

$90 for a weekend pass ( Fri-Sat-Sun PLUS Thursday during set up ) is a bit steep , paying the extra to get it during setup Thurs is the only way to really have a shot at the good stuff . Seems the sale during setup irked quite a few show goe'rs.

The show definitely had a traditional flair , a lot less tact-cool stuff , which was a definite plus. I believe Ruple was sold out before the show opened Friday :( , saw quite a few on dealers tables.

A bud inquired about a folder at the Dozier table , and they were all sold during setup Thursday from what he was told by the folks working the Dozier table ( Bob wasnt there , neither was J. Young , Fowler and some others from last year ).

I was there for a bit on Friday with some buds , you could easily see all there was in an hour or so. I did get to talk to quite a few makers more than normal , and there was certainly some quality stuff there. Not sure how most makers did , Les George said he OK.
I never did venture over to the antique arms side , seems they have always had the same stuff ( same exact stuff year after year ).

Preston's slippies were a treasure to hold , as were Don Morrow's. I dropped some $$$ at the K&G booth , much needed supplies , then walked all over hell's half acre trying to find a place to eat at the Riv...if anyone gets the chance to eat there...PASS ! ;)

Rumor of another show coming to Vegas later this year , I am sure it will far exceed what this show has become.

How many of those pocket sharpener's did you get SS ? ;)
Adjustable for any angle !!

I am here in Utah and i realy have to get my butt in the car and drive to these. maybe bring some of my work. I have been complaining to bubba-doll about how all the shows are back east and its to far for me to go but i always space out vegas. but i would like to see some hammer-in's down this way, i am planing on trying to go to the one in Montanan thats coming up.

Yaah..it seemed to be a bit slow..as Dr Jim said..it started out dead and got slower. I was there Saturday and well....hardly anyone there. The good Dr said he passed up doing the SHOT show with his publisher to do this one and he wasn't at all happy about that. He mentioned something about not doing it again and that it was a "trial run to test the waters" as far as knife shows go...Apparently he could of easily stayed home and got a few back orders done. Oh well....

If any of you got to see that German sword he welded up..it was something really, REALLY nice...such an even pattern on that it is amazing.. I did see something rather amusing..he shaved off the ink off of a business card using one of his Japanese swords..Funnier than all get out if you ask me...

I agree...I don't think that this show will be around much longer. Not too many people were in the room when I was there on Saturday. I will ask Jim what he thinks about the show when I pop down there tomorrow. He mentioned to me that he is working on another kind of Japanese sword..something called a koragasu or something? It's for his 4th book..

Anyway...I wasn't all that thrilled by that show...and the stag prices were astronomical...

Jason..

I did the show a few years ago, and it was NOT very good than.
It was lacking in the crowd department.... :thumbdn: very slow show.
The place was nice and clean, very open & specious.
Some great makers there than..... BUT>>>
The cost to do the show - all the expenses, just can't do it now days.
And like someone said above, if you want to eat for a dollar your OK.
But if you want a real meal, go some were else.....:D:thumbup:

I will do my first Blade Show this year after making knives over 25 years....
I hope it goes well.

Todd

Todd , you will do well at Blade ! I thought I remembered you from a previous Vegas show.

Next year , perhaps Vegas show will be on the same weekend as SHOT Show. January 19–22, 2010 , though I doubt even that could revive the show.

One thing is for sure , the makers who were at the show did have some quality stuff , I hope each of them did well in sales or orders , and I appreciate their time they spent to talk and answer questions.

HA..they were all gone !

oh, the arms show probably had another 8 knifemakers and dealers...

The only reason I did not get to the Vegas show was recent surgery which put me months behind and I had no knives to take.
I like the show and some of my best clients and I met there for the first time.
I hope to be there next year!

Ed , both you and Bob Dozier ( as well as Gayle Bradley ) were certainly missed at the show.

Look forward to seeing you next year ( or perhaps at Blade ). Hope the healing is going well.

I went on Saturday and can only agree with what's been said. Is Dr. Jim the one who had the wootz?

Hello:

Jim had some wootz "cakes" he made under his table that he showed me and probaby a few other folks as well..I do not believe he had anything finished. I was over there when he was building the furnance to make it.I guess it worked.

Mostly he had laminated stuff, swords, some knives and a couple of reallt nifty pieces, especially that three core sword...Boy that was just gorgeous. Still can't figure out how he gets that "bovine ivory" to take a dye like that. When I try it, well it comes out spotty. I got to ask him about that the next time I see him..

Still, that show was simply a let down as far as what I was looing for anyway...

I had a great time and did well. My only regret is that I didnt get out from behind my table for but a few min at a time. I didnt get to see anyone elses stuff....
