Vegas Special

Bruce, Charcoal bluing, could you please explain........ I really enjoy seeing you museum quality work!

Doug Turnbull is an expert on the "charcoal" or sometimes referred to as "Carbona" bluing. Its a trade secret for him and he will take it to the grave.
I have read in several places about the old process, they say its a hot (600 deg.) process that has charcoal and pine pitch melted and mixed and constantly drips on the parts as they rotate thus giving the parts an even dark blue color. I would like to learn to do it here but seems to be a lost formula. Anybody have info on it?

Phenomenal work Bruce!

I agree about all your amazing work disappearing into collections.
I hope there are enough good pictures of all your pieces (in progress too) to someday put them together in a coffee table book. It'd be a great way to record them for posterity.

Beautiful Job Bruce! I always love looking at your work. This piece is outstanding. I would love to make one of these knife pistols one day, do all the work and engraving and everything else myself. I love looking at your work, I really like the one you did the progression thread on the other day. That one is truly amazing! Thanks for always sharing. Dwayne

I love to see Bruce's extraordinary gun-knife art. Two of his pieces
have appeared in my book "The Great Collections" and here is one of
them for everyone to enjoy!

All the best,

I do enjoy the compliments. Thankyou very much.

I am just finishing up the Pistol/dagger "Tortula"
I've spent more hours with her than with my own wife.

Bruce Bump, Par Excellence. Not only the patience of Job also a Helluva lot Smartier...

Those are amazing. The entire packages take them over the top. Absolutely beautiful.

Have to say Bruce that "Tortula" is my favorite pistol knife of all I have seen.

Thanks Kevin, I have to say it operates mechanically the best too. The hammer design keeps black powder flash from entering and gumming up the pivots and sear. We shot it about 50 times at Joshs without a misfire too. Too bad there are no sights or it could be dangerous. :)

Same here. I think those look good on full size blades.

I have seen historical examples I believe where the gun was positionned along the flat, rather than the edge, of the blade.

In any case, there must be a lot of design possibilities.

Bruce, I think that you are definitely going to find yourself a good
spot in the history books of knife art!

All the best,

Bruce,

Watching this come to life in the makers forum and seeing it finished has been great too see.

Thanks for taking the time to share it. I keep going back to your work in David's book a lot, so it is nice to have a little variety. ;).
