Vegemite !!!! Oh dear

We have Cow Chips....and Buffalo chips...and I don't believe ANY amount of Vegemite could make them edible!

Now, even though I've never had Vegemite......a chicken chip and Vegemite sandwich does sound great!

Have to agree with Andy. That stuff is an acquired taste, to say the least ! ;)

I lived in England until 13 then we emigrated to New Zealand. I have had the opportunity to eat both over a period of years.
It took years to stop believing English Marmite (there's a New Zealand version as well, blecch!) was not the superior product.
I used to say that the Aussie Vegemite was better than NZ Marmite, but still had that yeasty aftertaste (which I didn't like).
It was on my return to England after 10 years in the antipodes, that I got to sample English Marmite again.
It was at that moment that I realised the thing I had been missing was basically a thick salt solution with no flavour at all.
Shortly after that I discovered that all the supermarket chicken smelled and tasted of fish. (These were the days before free range and taste the difference)
and the bacon shrunk to a third its size while releasing a white scum while you cooked it.
I don't know if the UK food industry had always adulterated the food and we didn't notice because we grew up with it (and even grew to like it)
or if it got worse while we were away. I do know that what really scared me was that after being back in the UK for 3 months, I stopped noticing the smell and taste of fish when I had roast chicken.
Vegemite on toast (Vogels bread) with a poached egg on top is the perfect brekky.
Vegemite and Peanut Butter is very nice.
I do like Promite as well, but it's too runny and doesn't last any where near as long as Vegemite.
The worst insult of all, is that Vegemite is cheaper than (English) Marmite in UK supermarkets

It's just plain unaustralian to not like vegemite......Magoo and Andy you should be ashamed of yourselves!

Gravel, I hadn't read this post before replying to your PM.

This is a great thread! Really made me laugh!

Vegemite is excellent on toast but should be used sparingly...... It's can be a cruel mistress

A friend from OZ brought some back and FORCED me to give it a go....Vegemite how bad could it be?! Well now that explains why the VB tasted so good afterwards...:eek:

Aussie Beer...Victoria Bitters....According to Andy....Very Bad.....Went down ok but my palate will accomodate any beer....;) BTW I'm going to give that Nutella and Bacon a shot...Assess, Improvise, Overcome!

I don't know what VB is, vegetable burger maybe? but all I can think about now is Nutella...

mmmmm nutella...

Edit, oh, Victoria Bitters... doesn't sound good... but when I do drink beer, I can drink just about anything, I'd give it a go.

I've never had absinthe either, that's supposed to be pretty wretched, right? Vodka and whiskey are the only hard alcohols I like, tequila makes me want to :barf: except tequila handles, I loooove those

When she showed up she had beer in one hand and who cares about what was in the other hand...Ok it was Vegemite and some other goodies.

The Victoria Bitters was the better of the two items....I prefer my alcohol neat so the beer was palatable and better than a number of the Mexican Imports down here in my area of the desert. I drink Tequila like water....:D

Vegemite is good........but I will take MARMITE any day. For breakfast on buttered warm toast........YUMEEEEE!!!!:)
