vegetable or chromic tanned for strop

I'm not so sure it does make any difference. On a sheath, it's important to stick with vegetable-tanned because of the chemicals used in chrome-tanned leather, but on a strop? hmmmm

One of my strops is chromium tanned leather loaded with white paste. I don;t use it much but, even so, I haven't seen any ill effects on my blades. Maybe it takes time, I don;t know.

I'd guess it's of little importance which tanning agent is used since it's going to be loaded with a grease-based compound. Like Strech says, the contact between the steel and the skin is going to be very limited when compared to a sheath. Not to mention, I always clean the residual compound off the blade with soap and water when I'm done.
