Vehicle Knives ?

Hello folks and MPS: I too live in NC, Asheville area and was wondering if carrying a Bagwell Hells Belles, next to the parking brake for looping off carjackers arms,
biggrin.gif
(just kidding!) But you are right, then I imagine in some cases haveing a folder could be concidered a concealed piece.(does size matter in NC?)

I would like to hear others thoughts and vehicle carries. I always have a folder on me, as most of us do. But keep a swiss champ in the console,(Stillen tuned Nissan) Nothing but a folder when on the two wheeled rocket.
This has become an interesting topic!!

Cool thread. Practical and immediately useful.

mps, you bring up an important point about legality of the fixed blades. Because of this thread, I just placed my Bushman in it's great little leather sheath between the drivers seat and the console. The handle sits right where my hand rests. Love it. I try to carry discreetly, but instantly ready. The Bushman fits that mode. I am, however, somewhat concerned about legality. If there is a tradeoff between legality and safety, safety will win!

I don't believe this type of carry is appropriate for those forumites who have children in their cars, unless they are old enough to understand and respect the need for preparedness.

I keep a Spyderco Rescue and A Gerber Multitool in my first aid box on the back seat and a 4 D cell Maglite alonside the the drivers seat

Live Long & Prosper, so you can buy more knives :)

With what I understand of NC laws concerning knives, a folder's blade should fall under 4" and fold into a handle that covers the whole blade, and you can carry a fixed blade as long as it isn't concealed. If its visible from outside you car, then it isn't concealed.(Of course someone might see it and decide to steal it.) Once you leave your car, I believe you can stick it in your glovebox, or under the seat, but while in the vehicle it should be visible.
So with that it mind I have a sheepsfoot serreated folder in my ashtray. My Cold Steel SRK, Leatherman, and Gerber LST are in the trunk in a bug out bag. Also for quick access in my trunk I have my Glock knife and a crowbar.

I keep an Ontario G.I. machete in the plastic sheath w/ sharperner and a CS Bushman behine the back seat of my Supercab. A SAK and Buck three blade Guildmaster in a tray on the tranny hump. I prefer the C cell Maglites because they fit my hand better. Another plus for the C-cell assuming you are using it for a flashlight, when bad weather is predicted and there is a run supplies at the local groceries and hardware stores the D and AA batteries always go first but you can usually find Cs. Anybody else notice rhis or just me? Also, a light under the seat tends to roll in my truck. Any body tried those bolt on side handles that turn your light into a tonfa? I had the idea for those things several years ago but couldn't come up with a good method to keep them from slipping.

I keep a generic full tang hunting knife in a box under the back seat of my truck,a Gerber multi-tool in the glove box,a Livesay WOO neck knife hangs from the steering column,a CS Delta Dart lives under the drivers side visor and a CS Sjambok hangs from the drivers side coat hook.

Never a dull moment!

I don't have anything really. I always figured that if my car is ever broken into, there's no need to arm the criminal either. Anyways, I keep all my defensive tools on my body and it seems to work out fine so far.

As for utility tools, I keep them in the trunk.

Camillus military s/s folder in my private vehicle and a Leatherman PST 2 in my work vehicle.

SAK and/or Gerber Multiplier in the console...

Serrated Endura clipped to the inside of the door pocket. Easy to reach and falls right to the hand when you drop you arm from the steering wheel. Not sure if is considered concealed...it is out in the open (the door pocket is approx 3 inches deep) and clipped to the top in plain view. I clip my Pelican flashlight, pager, pad and pen right next to it. Seems like it would fall into the same gray area as if a knife is considered concealed when clipped to the top of a pant's pocket. Hmmmmm....

I keep a LM Micra on my keychain.I also usually keep a cheap fillet knife and some type of large cheap folder(for those unexpected hunting and fishing ventures) in my toolbox. Other than these, I dont keep any knives in my truck for protection because I always have my trusty Colt Mustang in my glove box or on the seat beside me.

I carry a Gerber Guardian in the front pocket of my drivers side seat cover. I also have a Marine Corps Kabar in a tool box in the back.

A Camillus USMC knife under the seat (cheap and easy to replace) and an Ontario machete behind the seat. Also, an Army tri-fold shovel behind the seat. Any time I'm in the vehicle, I have my defensive folder handy. I have a CCW, but my wife asked about when she drives the truck! I reminded her she is an elected official (local school board) and by Idaho law, doesn't need a CCW, so she is legal. If one of my grown children need to borrow the truck, I remind them to take the USMC knife out from under the seat.

I don't have a car because I'm in college

, I am sooo happy. In my old car, I always had a tool box with the basic necessities, i also had jumper cables, a 3D maglite on the floor between the door and my seat, and a(cheapo) box cutter. However, when I get this car, maybe I'll add to my collection!

I'm glad you started this thread, Bartman, it reminded me ... lately I've been following Don LeHue's theory that if I'm in the car there's a knife in it, but years ago I duct taped a cardboard sheath to the underside of the dashboard and kept an old throwing knife with a handle I had wrapped with leather in it. I had forgotten all about that, don't even remember which car that was.
It was much faster to get at than the folders I carried in my pocket in those days. (Probably illegal in Massachusetts ... just about everything is illegal in Massachusetts; if they could get juries to go along with it they could put the whole state in jail....)

I still have that old throwing knife, but now I'm thinking I ought to keep a real knife under the dash so I can cut my way out through the roof after an accident if necessary. I might never have thought of that if it weren't for this thread.

I guess I'm a bit overboard on the vehicle load.

My F-150 is home to a Spyderco Goddard in a panel notch by the steering wheel and my trusty CS Recon Scout lies ready at hand under the driver's seat.

And, of course, the ever popular multi-tool in the console not to mention what I carry on my own.

P.S.: During the summer and fall, generally have a fully equipment hunting bow and quiver in the back of the cab. Bows and Blades, gotta love them!!!!

Good, useful thread, Bartman.

In my backpack of emergency gear, I have a C.S. Bushman, like a lot of you. The whole thing is in the back seat or trunk so there shouldn't be much of a "concealment" issue, especially the trunk.

I have considered leaving an inexpensive folder, such as a C.S. Voyager, in the glove box for those times I go out, in a hurry, and find myself "naked".

The 5 or 6 cell, C-size Maglights fit between the seat and center console of all the vehicles we have owned recently. It is a good size for my wife who has small hands yet has enough mass for other uses. In Canada, the best price for these seem to be LeBarons in Toronto or Montreal.

I keep a maglite and cold steel shovel behind
the seat. In my door I have a swiss pocket
knife, only because I have been too lazy to
take it out. I would like to velcro a fixed
blade below the dash, but haven't do to laws.
Now would an open spiderco below the dash be
against the law?Jo

Lets see, there is a Leatherman in the glove box along with a Gerber Serrated Gator. Behind the seat is a machete and a korea war era folding shovel. In the door panel is a Hibben thrower.
Plus whatever is on my person at the time.
Almost forgot the 3 d-cell Maglight between the door and the seat. If something looks like it could make into trouble that is what gets pulled out first.

Good thread.
In my Cherokee:
CS mini pal on key ring with ignition key only.
A 7in J.Marttiini fillet knife in door" long sharp and will not rust if rained on.
A Schrade Tool in glove box.
A 5C cell Mag light beside seat.
In my P'up:
A Frost of Sweden fixed blade mounted under dash "more to keep it out of the way than anything else"
A Gerber tool in glove box.
A cheap beavertail machete behind seat.
