Vehicle winter bags

I keep my gen 1 BK2 under the seat of my truck, my Ontario machete in the truck box, and a cheapie multi-tool in the glove box. I probably need to add a few things that stay in the truck permanently, since my pack is in and out.

For my wife's kit, I have a hatchet, but I want to stick a BK-11 or -14 in there eventually.

okay this made me think..

my wife was in an accident while in florida on spring break as a kid, she was tossed to and fro in the van along with everything else inside, suitcases etc as it rolled over... most of the damage she sustained was caused by things inside the vehicle, other then the broken glass.. witness' said it looked like popcorn machine inside the van..

Safety Joe Here::

is everyone making sure your bags, shovels, hatchets and anything potentially dangerous is secured??

I should explain my earlier post a bit, I did have knives, and kit in my truck but have since removed them probably a year ago, they were not secure had there been an accident things may have been flying all over the place... my wife does have an emergency kit with the basics in there (no knife) flashlights, cables etc and it is partially secured by velcro sewn in the bottom and it sticks to the carpet in the back (open) compartment..

so when I make my kit this weekend I will lash it under the seat or whatnot, people have been killed by kleenex boxes place in their back window...

I'm not squared away from the projectile standpoint. Gotta big toolbox back there full of supplies. That'd be a bitch of a missle shooting around.

Good post Rob, thanks for pointing this out because it is VERY important. Flying junk in the cab is something I've experienced as well. I was in a car that a friend took through a house at 40mph, we did not even roll, just had an abrupt rear end "pop up" combined with an abrupt stop. All the junk in his back seat was airborn, and flying forward hard. Hammer, tape measure, money, shoes, all kinds of junk, into the backs of our heads and through the windshield. Had their been a knife it could have been fatal. Clutter in a vehicle is a sign of a fool, think about it. Secure everything.

No knives, machetes or tools in my truck at all when driving it to work. It would cost me my job. Instant termination. (Don't ask) When four wheeling, its a different story. Don't need to worry about getting there or back, it's a Power Wagon. :D Flying objects/projectiles in an accident are more of an issue than many realize. Many people are killed by them.

I keep my BK-6 Patrol machete in my vehicle (now SUV, used to be a 3/4ton diesel) kit. Also in the vehicle are usually:
A Spyerco rescue tool
A Brigade Quartermaster 12" bush knife
A Camillus US Army camp knife
A Gerber boltaction folder
A Gerber multi-tool
A 24" Plumb camp axe

I always like to make sure I have an appropriate edge handy. :)

And yes, I keep things pretty well secured. I also have seen the results of accidents with unsecured gear. I'm a big believer in bungee cords and cargo nets. They may not totally stop objects in a high energy crash, but it's better than nothing.

I'll try to dig it out for a photo. It's one of two that I bought for my vehicle kits probably 20 years ago. Not the greatest knife in the world, but would be useful. Not even sure if BQ is still around?

no beckers in my truck... yet. ill be honest, the biggest i may go is a remora or necker. the remora seems like a nice little short-notice knife. plus, being stainless steel, i would not feel as bad about putting it in the cargo box under the back seat and forgetting about it.

right now i have a leatherman pst2 multitool in the front console box thing. i keep an old camillus USAF pilot survival knife in the box under the back seat.

I'd like to see a pic of the BQ 12" Bush Knife.

Here's a few quick pics of the Brigade Quartermaster 12" bush knife (or short machete, if you will):

With the BK-2 for size comparison:

As you can see, it has been around the block a few times. I used it quite a bit back in the early 90's when I was a Boy Scout leader. It is basically a short machete made in El Salvador. I think they were a special run for BQ at the time. It also has a pretty nice nylon sheath with lots of attachment points and velcro. It seeemed to be a decent blade at the time. Nothing quite like a Becker, but adequate for a lot of camp tasks.

It got relagated to my vehicle kit about 20 years ago when I found my then new favorite camp knife, my Randall model 5.

Hmmmm, maybe I need to take a little sandpaper and clean up that blade a little? :o

Making sure EVERYTHING has a dedicated spot or is tied down is important. I read an article about that years ago in JP magazine and have since made a serious effort to keep from being a casualty of my own pack rat behavior.

While I do have my items in packs and strapped down, I do not advise the rest of you do this. If we all practice safety first then we will never see the bloody wounds and stitches pics. :)

I don't carry any of my big blades in my truck. I carry my Falcon II for an EDC, and it has my BK13, BK14, Mora MG, and Cold Steel American Lawman in it. I thought about stashing one in there though.

My old boss use to drive a Black Power Wagon, that was a pretty cool looking truck. You guys are making a really good point. I have a ton of shit in the back of my SUV that I would hate to have flying at me if I hit something. I should probably reconsider how I have some stuff stored back there.
