Sometimes when it rains it pours as the old saying goes. It has been a crazy last few weeks for me and it just keeps getting more and more interesting.

So the other night the wife and I have a great date night. We went to a benefit banquet, had a nice dinner, and walked away with some sweet guns. All the makings of a great evening.

Fast forward to the ride home..........

Get within a half mile of home and all of a sudden Dad, from the passengers seat, yells DEEEEEER. I had time to just get my foot over to the brake and BAM. It happened so fast it was like the deer just appeared in front of the car. Thank God no one was hurt. The car didn't fair so well but hey, it's just a car right?
Got out to survey the damage. Pretty much ripped the front passenger side off the car. It's there but hanging by a thread. Passenger door won't open, the front fender moved back so far that it wedged the door shut. The deer faired worse than the car did. She is no longer with us. Made me sad to see such a nice doe taken out like that. Pretty much destroyed all of the meat. What a shame.

Went and got an estimate on the damage to the car and it came to just short of $3500. So after some quick math I figured the deer would have yeilded around 80 pounds of meat. So 80 pounds for $3500 comes to $43.75 per pound. I never realized that venison was that expensive. All of a sudden filet and lobster doesn't seem so bad.

Glad you guys are ok Garth.
What I always do on road kills is just grab the back straps, they usually dont get damaged as they run on top against the spine and they are sooooooo tasty.
Congrats on the gun scores what did you guys win?

We walked out with a Colt AR15, a Ruger 10/22 takedown, and a Taurus 1911. My Mom also went and she won a Remington R1 1911.

The deer was so mangled that even the backstraps were wasted. Really hated to get nothing out of the deer. Being a hunter I have always used everything that I harvest. Just didn't work out this time. Guess I need to use different equipment next time.

Glad you guys are safe!

Have you ever added up how much hunting actually costs? When you add up your guns, ammo, gear, clothing, and optics it is a bit eye opening. Not to mention gas, corn for the feeders, planting food plots and building and maintaining blinds. Throw in the booze and deer hunting probably costs me close to a billion dollars a pound or so (give or take). But oh man is it worth it!!! :D

Sorry about the ordeal, Garth, but I'm glad you were all safe. If my wife knew how much I really spend on hunting......, WOW...,

I could not agree more. When you factor in everything venison, quail and fresh fish are the most expensive food out there. To think the bunny huggers want to stop the hunting. Imagine what that would do to the economy.

Glad you guys are safe!

True story. Makes Kobe beef look like a bargain sometimes. But you don't have to hike for miles over mountains and through valleys, freezing your b***s off crossing a glacier fed stream, carrying a 70 lb (before you shoot anything ) pack, and living off whatever small game you can kill added to freeze dried meals for a couple weeks.

Where's the fun in just going to the butcher? :D

ETA: Garth, you've got to get yourself something like this, I don't know if they make them for cars though :p

Wow this makes me feel very fortunate. I had the same thing happen about 2 weeks ago. I was going about 55 on the highway home one night. Deer jumped out and there was just no time to stop. I probably slowed to 40-45 before impact. I have a few dents and my headlight was shoved down a bit, nothing major at all. I'm glad you guys are okay.

Man I know what you mean about "no time to stop". It happens so fast. Glad you made it out ok.

Garth

to mention if you add in the cost of 4wheelers and such to get back there.

Sorry bout your vehicle, glad about your family.

They should make deer/elk insurance.

Venison Tar Tar. Glad you are OK.

Yeah, I calculated the lobster that we took in the Keys one year, and it was about $75 each with all the expenses. Its not about the cost, but about the good times. You can not put a price tag on that.

Imagine the damage a hundred pound lobster would have done! Thank goodness it was just a lil doe. Glad everybody's ok, Chewie.

My Dad ( 87 ) told me he'd like to go fishing for Father's Day. My brothers and I got together, chartered a boat out of Destin, FL for a half day. Six people traveling, nights stay.........caught our limit on Red Snapper in stormy 10-12 ft seas.
Red Snapper price per pound......priceless:(
Memories with my Dad.......priceless :)

Atleast it was her car and not my Hummer. I would have been really upset if I wrecked that. Then again the Hummer may have just went right over it with no problems.

good thing nobody got hurt (except for the deer that is)

so in the US you could keep the game? we hit one with my fathers volvo station wagon last year - but around here you have to call the tenant of the hunting ground and give the deer to him

...dont know what i would have done if it had been my (future collectible) car - probably nothing rational

Yeah here you can keep the deer if you want it. Otherwise the local sheriff has a list of people who have requested to be called if there is a deer available. I have seen a few times where the call goes out across the police radio that a deer has been hit and 20 people show up wanting the deer. Actually pretty funny when everyone is racing to get there and then the guy that hit it decides last minute that he is gonna keep it.

Glad your ok. I have a question tho, and please don't take it wrong, but did you see the deer before you hit the brakes?

Trust me I drive about 150,000 mikes a year, thru the mid west, south east and north east. A lot at night. I see the deer all the time and have been lucky not to hit any yet. Most of the time they just saunter out there like they don't know what your car is(cause they don't). Those are the ones that are easy to dodge. It's the ones that come bolting out of the woods like wolfman is after them and basicly run into you that are the dangerous ones.

Seeing a large animal in front of your vehicle suddenly, when you have no time to stop, is quite traumatic. They pop out of corn fields within the blink of an eye. Glad you hear you're alright.

The deer shot out of a cornfield like her tail was on fire. My Dad yelled deer and I instinctively moved my foot to the brake but by the time I actually applied pressure to it the whole thing was over. I probably see deer in or beside the road atleast 5 days a week driving to or from work. You're right generally they just kind of walk out or are at a leisurely trot. That was however not the case this time.
