I'm a total noob at knifemaking so be easy. Why do I see a "chute" underneath the contact wheels of belt grinders? I'm sure they are hooked to a vacuum system of some kind, but why?

You would not want to breath all that wood dust and metal shavings in plus you would be amazed at how much dust and shavings you are throwing in the air while grinding.

Without some sort of dust and grit removal, you would end up knee deep in metal grindings and wood dust before long. That combo plus hot sparks could spell a disastrous fire. The extraction system removes the problem.

Wood dust, abrasive dust, steel dust etc. are all toxic and will literally destroy your lungs and kill you. Many knifemakers go to great lengths in fighting dust.

Chronic lung disease, emphysemia, lung cancer.

good to avoid.

Dust collection is a good start, but PPE like a P100 filtered respirator is needed too.
