Venturi forge how-to?

I got my venturi burner forge from Darren Ellis this week--woohoo! It's a huge step up from the two-brick, JTH-7 forge I have been relying on for the past nine months.

Anyway, I'm getting the liner installed and cured this week, and as I was working on it last night, I started to wonder if there are any good how-to resources on adjusting and using venturi-style forges.

Does anyone have any links, posts, threads, videos etc. that are recommended reading for getting the most out of a venturi forge?

I'm particularly interested in understanding how the thing works and how to adjust the atmosphere.

Also, when I cranked it up to cure the Satanite, I was getting some sputtering or backfiring.

Words of wisdom are also welcome. :)

Thanks,
Josh

Try a google search for tutorials or http://www.knivesby.com/knifemaking.html, http://gbrannon.bizhat.com/#hammer, . Sputtering or backfiring is from not enough pressure on the gas. You need an adjustable regulator if you don't already have one. Get ready for sticker shock- they are like 30 bucks or so. Just turn up the gas a couple PSI or so. Oh yeah, a gauge is nice too. My venturi forge used to run at about 10-12 psi. My forced air runs at 4-5 and burns too hot (go figure). Dan

Good to know. I do have a regulator on my forge, so I must have had it cranked back too far.

I have done some Google crawling but haven't turned up much specifically on the fine points of using venturi burners. Those two links are chock-full of good info, and I've read most of it already, but again, I'm looking specifically for venturi info.

Thanks for the help!
Josh

You need a little back pressure with a venturie, a regulator might be a good idea as well. The finished forge might provide the back pressure needed so I would not adjust much until you get the forge finished and try the new burner in the final product. Cheers Ron.
