I want to buy a vertical band saw for cutting contours and spend as little money as possible. Is this something that can be feasibly accomplished for under $400 or so?

Thanks in advance

I see used horizontal bandsaws on Craigslist all the time for under $400. IIRC, you can even find them on amazon or ebay for about $250 to $300 brand new. Simply rotate the bandsaw to its vertical position, and make a table, and you're good to go.

There was a recent thread where somebody even made a table that set inside the clamp for easy install and removal, while keeping the horizontal cutoff capabilities.

The other option is a portaband and maybe a SWAG table, or a homemade table. I believe you could do a Dewalt or Milwaukee portaband with a SWAG stand for about $400.

Now, it's possible that you could also find an actual metal cutting bandsaw on the used market for $400, but those are very few and far between around here.

I assume you were talking about cutting metal, btw. If just for G10 and wood, you can spend much less on a small wood bandsaw, but a metal saw can really be used for both.

After replacing the stock blade and setting it up correctly, my Harbor Freight 4x6 does a good job for me. It can be run Horizontal or vertical and with a 20% off coupon they run around $200.00

^^^ Yes. These HF bandsaws are good value. Replace the blade witha good one and do a little set up and you'll be in business.

You see a lot of stands for the portable band saws on the web.
I didn't feel like springing for the Swag table, so I build my own. A couple hours and almost nothing in materials.
It's oak and 3/4 ply, with an aluminum table. I might replace that with stainless at some point. We'll see how it holds up.
It's not elegant, but done for $150 off Craigslist. Personally I'd rather have a used USA made saw than a new HF, but that's me. YMMV
