Vertical flat grinding on a wheel?

I made a video a while back that shows my process for doing plungeless kitchen knives but I can't get it to load on YouTube. I essentially do a sweeping plunge and take it to .010" at the edge. I then go to an A45 gator on my 8" wheel like you've done. It works well to help blend the plunge and get all the scratches heading the same way. One thing to watch is you can get some divots from the belt seem so it's best to be on the lowest speed possible and make a full pass from the tang to tip. I leave a little extra meat at the tip because it's easy to wipe it out.

If I remember right, Moran used to rough grind his blades like that on a stone wheel. At least in his earlier days.

I've found greaseless compound on the buffer somewhere in the process really helps blend everything together using this approach

OK, holy smokes!
I gave it a try this evening and just wow.
Not nearly as hard as I thought. Had a thick blade to remove a bunch of metal from and it just took it off like mad.
Also used the 40 cubitron I was ready to throw out. It was like using a new belt!
And it didn't get nearly as hot as quickly.
Freakin awesome!
This wasn't finish work by any means, but man, what a great tip!
Thanks for the post Kevin!

If it worked for you, I'm sold. (To tell a secret, I did feel like a dang genius when I figured this out). So you rough ground a blade doing this?

Yes, I had a slight warp and needed to remove some metal on one side, and just used it to remove a lot of steel and taper too. :)

I do mostly convex on my kitchen knives, so I can't really use this to finish. But still, this is a fantastic tip. Will save me half my belt life at least. $$ :)
