I have been busy at work getting a vertical forge together. I have been having trouble getting my horizontal forge up to welding temps it runs off venturi burners. I hooked a thermocouple up to it and was only getting up to 2080. After talking to a couple of people I talked to Don Hanson who was nice enough to give me measurements and pics of his two forges. Also Don gave me pics and specs of his blown burner. Thanks again Don I really do appreciate all the help. I have it almost done now and the blower from Kayne and Sons will be here on Thursday. I had the scroll hanging on the wall for a while. I picked it up at the local scrap yard and I thought it would look good as a handle for the lid. I will get some action shots as she comes to life. Thanks for looking. -Burton

Pretty nice, Burton. Ironically, I started building a vertical forge about a week ago, too. This will be for my heating treating forge and not my forge welding forge. Just waiting for the Satinite to dry. I was building mine to get a more consistent/ even heat. Can't wait to see the pics of your forge in action- good work!

Look'n good Burton :)

That looks like the same blower I have on mine. It's the one Grant Sarver came up with right? I think Kayne&Son still sells them. At the time I got mine, there were 3 different models. Mine puts out so much air that I had to make another dampening valve in order to run the forge at lower temps.

Yeah Nick I got it from Kayne. They really push the air. The forge is running good had no problem getting up to 2300 degrees and would have went more. I have a thermocouple and pid hooked up and it is nice to be able to watch the temps. Anyhow here are a couple of pics of it running today. I welded a billet in it. It is nice to be back making steel. Thanks again Don and all who provided advise. -Burton

Thanks guys. Yeah the chain deadens the ring a bit and also gives a place to lag bolt it down.

Karl, I have yet to add the litter but I am going to. I welded the billet yesterday soaked in hydrocarbon solvent with a light dusting of anhydrous borax.

Burton, you will love it if you don't already. I have used both horizontal and vertical, I love the vertical and have scrapped the horizontal for parts.

Burton I was wondering how loud is that little blower? Just curious, always looking for ideas for my next forge build and this has me intrigued.

The blower is surprisingly quite. I thought that it would be louder. Man does it push some air though. I was welding damascus yesterday and had to shut the gate down to about an 1/8" slot and was running 2250 - 2300 no problem at all.

Yep - I would think the combustion is probably louder than the blower.
Great to have something that will really do its job - isn't it?
