My first post so here goes. Can anyone offer any advice on what to look for in a large hunting style knife with a shoulder harnass. I am a big guy so I can handle a big blade but am having a hard time finding good information. I have looked at "Bowie" styles but none that mount infront of the shoulder. Thanks.

Welcome tuffdoug,Get any knife you like, send it to Bob Dozier,He can make a Kydex rig for you.

Hey Guys..

Andrew Thanks much..:)

Doug...

It all depends on how and what you plan on carrying...

What type of knife do you want to carry?, and
How do you want to carry it ?

Personally I don't like Cross Draw shoulder rigs at all..They are fine for a handgun, however a knife is a different story altogether..

Personal flavor,,and not to put down any other shoulder system at all..

What I make and wear are Strong Arm shoulder rigs, where the knife is drawn from whatever hand you would normally use the knife in, or your Strong Arm.

Even large knives can be carried this way concealed or not. In fact the larger the knife the easier it is to draw, because it is right there.

Anyway,,let me know what kind of knife you want to use,,and maybe we can come up with some ideas..

I would also stay away from a shoulderharness with the butt of the knife toward the front.
Remember that a knife is "tightly" fitted into the sheath, and from experience i have with firearms i know that shoulderholsters do move in the draw. But a knife inside a sheath must fit tightly, and the moment you are not pulling straight away from the sheath the knife will probably bind inside the sheath.

Carrying a knife with the handle toward the front is also an invitation for an adversary to grab the knife and pulling it away from you.

An upside down sheath should worker better and more comfortable. You can also wear a big knife this way without it protruding out of the back.

I carry a fixed blade daily and IMHO you can't beat a strongside vertical or horizontal S.O.B kydex sheath with a teklock.

just my 2 cent

Thanks guys for the great advise. Good to hear what you know. By the way Mongo, I don't think a moose is going to get my knife away from me. LOL! Some thing that I can incorporate my .45 Auto would be good. I am goingto check out all the links provided by you fine new friends. I just hate things hanging off my hips.
