(very) High end khukuries

Actually I did try to post a pic of mammoth teeth scales earlier.

Go to the above link, click on the "All handle materials" and start going down on the lefthand side til you come to it. Should be the fourth shot down.

I'd suggest that you get the scales, and send two pieces of wood exactly scale size over to make sure the handle section is made no larger than what was sent. Then when the thing gets here, send it with the real scales to Terry Sisco to install.

Oosik is nice too. Be sure to check out the mokume for bolsters and pommels that they show a little further down.

Rusty,

Sounds like a good possibility. Do the handle in base woods, and change the material to ivory within the US from legally imported stock. We would have to do this with the main handle and some of the accessory pieces. Sounds like a good way to go.

I guess the first step would be to close off on the design.

Actually, I suspect the trickiest part will be figuring out how to apply a 19th century style blueing to the integral piece(blade+ full tang+ bolster + Pommel), and matching accessory items. How do you buff the replacement handles on without removing (damaging)the color?

BTW, it sounds like the original blue might be best applied at some point during the tempering process:

I believe I have seen a few older kukries done this way. The wood covered leather sheath is replaced by a lined brass sheath. The brass sheath can be enamel (dark blue - to match the blade and pommel) and tastefully decorated with small qualtity of inlayed precious metal. Since by doing this the sheath can usually be fitted thinner it gives the whole package a far more elegant/business-like look.

N2S:
I believe there's still a cold blue that comes in the antique plum color that a lot of reenactors use on their equipement.
I used it once to blue an old friends antique .22 rifle and it came out beautiful!!!!
The secret to using cold blue is to warm the metal to room temperature with either hot water or by sticking in an oven at about 200*.
It doesn't seem to matter how warm a room is when you pick up a piece of steel it always feels colder than room temperature.
It can be done!!!!:cool::D

This colorful little specimen arrived in today's mail.

Is there any thruth to romors that if you buy three or more of these your caste standing in Nepal will automatically be upgraded? :)

N2S, When I got to the photo of your new rig all I could say was..WOW!!! She is a outstanding, beautiful piece. Incredable work. Great acquisition to any collection. Congradulations.

:
That is H.I.'s FInest Khukuri, Bar none!!!!

And if that blade had a users handle and scabbard it would also be a very popular everyday khukuri as well!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love those Dui Chiara Blades!!!!!!!:D

Geez man!

N2S...That is...well....WOW

One day I am gonna have to get one of my own...yes, one day...one day... :D :D :D

All these kothimoda khukuris are Bura made (he even cures the bone for the handle) and very decent knives. We can't make the scabbards at BirGorkha so it is farmed out and I think the sunar who made this one skimmed some silver off the scabbard of this particular model so this fact was passed on to n2s who took this one at a discount because silver weight was not up where it should be.

Yvsa has a pretty decent collection. Guys who know most about knives always make my best customers.

N2S,

You could also have Terry blue the blade for you in addition to replacing the handle. I'm pretty sure he offers that service. That way you wouldn't have to worry about the bluing wearing off when the handle is replaced with your material of choice.

kamagong,

That's a whole other knife project. :)

I hope to work with Uncle Bill to see if we can produce something like the kothimoda we discussed earlier in this thread. It might take a while, but it should be fun.

So do you folks have any other thoughts on what an interesting kothimoda should look like? We probably covered everything short of a rail, rings, and telescopic sight.

I'm sorry to say about the only way we are going to get the kothimoda that n2s wants is for me to personally oversee the project. Maybe next year.

:
You could have 22-24 karat scroll work done on the spine of the blade similar to an old one that was posted a while back!!!!
I believe the spine on that one was rounded like the GRS, but a flat spine ala YCS could also be done and engraved with the gold!!!!
(Might be worth a search as that was one beautiful khukuri!!!!)

And you could also have the scroll work and inlay done inside the Sword of Shiva ala like the one Harry had done in gold IIRC!!!!

And I don't know if any gold work was mentioned for the scabbard, but that could be done as well.
I think John Powell has a Kothimoda done like that.

And if you really wanted to get into fancy there could also be some precious stones of your choice inset into a bone handle or as Rusty has suggested the Mammoth Ivory. Just think what some brilliant Blue Sapphires would look like inset in Blue Mammoth Ivory!!!!Double:cool:
Or some emeralds in one of the other Mammoth Ivories!!!!

Or how about a gold butt cap embedded with lots of small diamonds?!?!?!?

I'm really good at spending other people's money ain't I?:p:rolleyes::D
