Very Inexpensive 2-3in gentlemans folder

3" closed, 2 1/4" VG-10 blade, titanium handle scales, includes black leather pouch
A.G. Russell: $35 + shipping

THIS! There's also a 2,5" version.

I've had my spyderco cat for a couple of months know and still feel it is an excellent value for the money it may only be 440c but the edge retention is decent and F and F is incredible not to mention it is a very nice "Gent" size also for a little more $$ there is the the Dragonfly 2 in VG-10.

What about the Buck Nobleman? Definitely in the price range and has the look of a "gentleman's folder".

But you can't go wrong with the Kershaw Crown 2. I have both versions (big and small), and they are an outstanding value for the price. And I had no build issues whatsoever with either one.

Again, thanks for the help guys, I've just got so many options that I simply didn't even know existed before.

This looks pretty promising, but has a few things I don't like about it. It is a great size (love the 2.5in bladed version), but I wish the dang thing had a pocket clip (again, I hate things in my pockets... I even use a carabiner to clip my keys to the side of my pocket so they don't lump up at the bottom. I also never use any keychain accessories. My keys literally have 3 keys on them, thats it.). The blade steel seems to be great though (I'm still learning, but if I'm not mistaken, thats pretty good isn't it?).

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-M...727_161030.jpg The sanrenmu isn't as aggressive as you might think from pictures. What you have to keep in mind is that it is a pretty small knife. https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-o...727_161040.jpg

Do you have any recommendations on where to find one, I still have no idea where to get one. This one hasn't been tossed out yet, as it is roughly what I'm looking for, I'm just trying to see whats out there first. Also, how thick is the whole knife? I also wish it was less shiny, that polished/chromed clip looks like it would stand out. Still, its a nice looking little knife.

The nobleman looks fine, but I'm not sure its exactly the "style" that I am looking for. Thanks for the recommendation though.

Also, the crown 2 looks pretty decent, and I'm glad to hear that you haven't had any FF issues or anything like that. Have you ever handled a Skyline or Chill to compare it to them?

boker exiliber 2 great little knife for 40 buck gots some g10 on it too..

I'm assuming you meant the boker excalibur 2? I can't seem to find much info on that one, any help there?

Thanks guys, sorry I'm so long between posts, but I'm working 2 jobs right now. Thanks for all of the input though, this is really helping.

Cheers!

Yes, I have a Skyline in addition to the Crown 1 and Crown 2. And, frankly, the Skyline is simply head and shoulders above the Crown. It's light, with a flipper (which I am partial to) and terrific blade shape. It's a slight bit longer than 3", but so light that it might not matter. (Both Crowns are a bit on the heavy side, and even the Crown 2 is slightly heavier than the Skyline.)

And I have an Exskelibur 1 (it's in my pocket right now) but not the smaller Exskelibur 2. It's a beautiful knife that I can't ever get to open with one hand (there's no hole or stud -- just a slightly flared out spine). This may sound shallow, but I bought it for its looks. If the Exskelibur 2 is similar, it would be a fine knife too.

This is one I have my eyes on - fits the criteria. p.s. it's the EKA Swede 8

Kershaw Chill is crazy lightweight and thin:

That picture is from this excellent photo review: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/822598-Kershaw-Chill-pics-and-video

Kershaw Skyline:

Also available in a Damascus blade for just a little bit more: (member: Dekz' picture)

EDIT:

to ocnLogan:

The "finger-guards" are actually what you use to open up the knives - also known as flippers. They work very efficiently and propel the blade as fast as you like depending on your technique (slow or fast).

The OD-1 is slightly thicker and heavier due to the steel framelock. I think you'd enjoy either of the two above knives for slacks carry (the OD-1 could weigh down the pocket somewhat).

Good luck with your decision! :)

The Kershaw Chill is pretty nice for around $20... or maybe a CRKT Drifter stainless frame-lock...

For just under $40 you could get a Kershaw Zing; it's a very cool little knife. Not the definition of a 'gentleman's knife' but it would serve, I think...

What about the Cold Steel Mini Tuff Lite? Small, lightweight, and pretty nonthreatening. Cold Steel does a solid job with their AUS8 and I think the blade shape would prove very useful in an office type environment.

Again, thanks guys. I'm amazed how much info you have brought to my attention.

Knivesandguns:

Great post, I really liked the informative style that you used. Its looking like I might end up choosing between a few different kershaws. I really like how thin and light they are, while retaining the pocket clip as well as the blade style that I like. Also, how much more is the damascus skyline... because that thing is sweet looking. Also, in a thickness comparison, is the skyline any larger than the chill? Anyone know that? And its too bad neither of those blades come in a slightly smaller size. So I am still kinda considering the OD2 as well, but the thickness might turn me away from that one.

I quite like most of the CRKT knives, and will have to look a bit more into the drifter posted above, as well as the previously posted delegate (they do make a "slightly" smaller version of that knife I just found out, so I'll look at those again).

I also liked the AG Russel knives. They had the best steel of the bunch (from what I understand anyway, I'm still getting a hang on things), but I just really don't like to use my fingernails to open the knife, and I really want a pocket clip. If they had that, I think I might already own one.

Once again guys, the help has been immense and I'm astounded at what is out there for <$40.

I got my sanrenmu from a site called aliexpress. It came within one week of ordering which I thought was good coming from Hong Kong. They are also easy to find on ebay, the thickness is comparable to a leek, just slightly thicker. The deep cary clip us nice. It's also available with an frn handle. You can get one for less than $16 and still have money left to try a cheaper Kershaw.

While you're checking out Kershaws you might also want to take a look at the Zing. If you shop around, they can be had for right at or even a tiny bit below your limit with shipping factored in.

How about a Kershaw Half Ton?

It's a little different with the red handle and wrench shaped pocket clip but it's a very well made little knife. Solid lockup, smooth action, great blade shape, feels good in the hand, and it's fun to use.

A very good little knife for less than $15.

Ok, I'm slowly making progress narrowing things down to something I really want (made somewhat harder by all of the great continuing recommendations). I'm also finding some knives that I really like, but don't see myself using in the role of my semi "gentlemans folder"... I think is how the slipper slope of more knives than you actually need starts... Some of the recommendations here will make it onto a wish list... pretty sure of that.

Question to Brerarnold, and anyone else that may have handled one of the CRKT Delegates. At first I thought they were a bit too large (3 1/8), but now that for some reason, most of the knives that I am actually considering are roughly that size, so it would seem silly to toss them out because of that anymore. My question about them is this. I've been reading some reviews of it, and I've heard many people talk about how the opening mechanism is hard to use and/or get used too (particularly so on the smaller of the two versions). What are your thoughts on it? Also, how powerful is the AO? I have a kershaw with speedsafe on it, and it opens with a "CRACK", which is more attention than I like in an office environment. How does it compare?

Also, question for the kershaw knife guys, or anyone with experience with them (Meaning, the Chill, Skyline, and Zing). Do they still make the damascus Skyline? I have been having a harder time finding it, or pricing on it. I am wondering what the premium is for it, and if people have experience with it. I am also wondering if the Skyline and Zing are comparable in thickness to the Chill. I've seen some great photos of the Chill, and wonder how those too compare. Also, the main difference between the Skyline and the Zing vs the Chill seems to be blade steel. Is it that much better?

Thanks again for the help, as well as the patience with me.

I'd stay away from assisted-opening knives, especially in an office environment. Non-knife people commonly mistake an AO for a 'switchblade' which could potentially cause you some grief at work. Many manual blades can be out just as fast, but at least you have the option to control deployment speed. Just something to think about...

I've never owned a Skyline, but I did own a Chill at one point and I still have my Zing. You get quite a bit of blade with the Chill, it's super light and thin, and very comfortable to carry. It's a flipper design, so again, the blade will come out quickly unless you open it with two hands. The Zing is probably my favourite Kershaw to date--and is one of the most underrated folders around, in my opinion. It has both a flipper and thumb-studs, and doesn't look overly aggressive. The blade is perfectly centered (at least on mine,) nice fit & finish, and rides fairly low when clipped to the pocket. The liners aren't skeletonised, so it might be a little heavy for its size, but feels more 'solid' than 'chunky.' If you're looking for thin and light, go with the Chill. If you want a decent all-rounder you can take to work and also slip into your jeans on the weekend, go with the Zing. The CRKT Drifter would still be a good option though and is worth another look!

Good luck :)
