Knife specs. Busse 11" blade 5/16" thick stock, 16 1/2" over all length.

Sheath: Wicket and Craig Veg.tan 7/8 oz with 2/3 oz. lining, total about 10 oz. with beaver tail inlays. Collar retention with D ring tie down. Single 7/8 oz. welt.

The sheath measures 13/32" thick from just below the belt loop wedge all the way to the tip. After the first insertion the knife slips easily in and out and the sheath has formed to the thickness of the blade which gives really good additional retention.

Gorgeous sheath Paul! It has a slimming effect on the knife. I noticed that on the Tracker sheath as well. That is a very attractive mouth/retention arrangement and I'm surprised just how beautiful that beaver tail inlays. Thanks for sharing the pics.

Very nice work! Just like jdk1 I like the mouth and retention very much. Also the way of mounting the Dring is great.

very cool and as always excellent craftsmanship. i don't like such big blades, but that sheath is great.

Mr. Long
Thanks for showing us how it turns out, instead of adding an extra welt thickness in there like I have been doing. Great looking sheath.

Very nice indeed.
Is the strap holding the 'D' just glued to back layer and the lining?

Yes, there are two tabs about one inch long, both above and below the "D" they are skived to zero and then cemented and then the lining goes on further locking them in place. It would take a MAJOR disaster to dislodge them. You could either stitch or set a rivet both top and bottom, but I believe that would be overkill in this case.

Paul,
I just asked because I am the overkill kinda person ;)
And I know that some of the Busse boys are really rough on the knives (guess they want to test the no-questions-asked warranty) and by extension on the sheaths.
I have no doubt that your time tested methods will work for as long the sheath will work and it'd take some premeditated doing to screw it up.

From doing my own screwing around with cement, I'd say stitching would be purely ornamental. By that I mean (from limited attempting to absolutely destroy the bond) the leather will tear before the bond does. Stitching or rivets won't matter as far as I'm concerned, but a lot of folks like a double row of welt stitching too. Just perspective I guess, and nothing wrong either way.

Last thing I'd want is to dare the Busse crowd, but yeah, I don't see a necessity. ;)

This is off topic a bit, but if you do need to release a cured contact cement bond just saturate the immediate area with the prescribed thinner and wait a few seconds and it will come loose easily. The thinner generally evaporates leaving no ring to speak of, but if it does it's fairly easily refinished. (A tip from the old saddle shop)

That's a great tip to remember Paul. I've cut along the welt before to rebuild a sheath, I wonder if it would have been easier/cleaner to apply your method.

Beautiful work as usual Paul. I am looking forward to seeing you at Blade in a few weeks.:)

11" blade and 5/16" thick?

Beautiful sheath is in no way overkill, but that knife? Sheesh!

elof, your correct on the Busse crowd being hard on their gear for the most part. Just like any other knives they have their collectors and their users. The users are downright abusive and that is why I tend to ask if they plan on using the knife or simply dressing up a safe queen. something tells me the above knife is a safe queen.

There is a fellow in Australia that uses his Moab though.

The knife belongs to a Dentist up North and he does plan on using it…….BUT I would bet it will be for some relatively short camping outings and it will probably not see much abusive use at that. I agree with Dwayne, probably most of it's life will be spent being displayed or stored.

You might suggest a load bearing vest with a counterweight on the other side so he doesn't walk crooked. :p

The counterweight might have to be pretty substantial though. Correction, VERY substantial. :D

I've seen some footage of that Dwayne ;)
