Very Light Knife

Hi All,

I am looking for a second lightweight knife for EDC. I have a T12-CF from William Henry that is ~1.6 ounces. I just sent it back to William Henry for spa treatment, so I have been without it for a while (and I miss it). I have another T12-CF but it has a damascus blade in it. It is a nice knife, but I am concerned with using it. I mostly cut open boxes, letters, etc with my edc and the William Henry's are great for that.

I initially thought I would just get another T12-CF or T10-CF, but it appears that William Henry doesn't make them anymore. So I am at a decision point....

Do I wait for a T12-CF or T10-CF come up for sale, or do I find another knife, or do I use the Damascus version?

Is Damascus steel meant for using everyday (Office Warrior; Tape, Cardboard)?

Is there any other very light knifes out there that are in the same category as William Henry? William Henry makes some nice knives, but they are a bit flashy for me for an EDC. I looked at their EDC lines and I would like a simpler looking knife.

Requirements:
  • Very Light; Would love to be in the 1.5-2.0 ounces (even lighter would be better)
  • 2.5" - 3" Blade. Thin is fine.
  • Single Hand operation (Thumbscrew; I am a righty).
  • Locking mechanism (really don't have a preference).
  • Blade Steel not that important
  • Smooth Flipping (Stress relief factor).
  • Clip for pocket carry.
  • Black Carbon Fiber would be ideal.
  • Very conservative looking.
  • Would prefer a non coated knife (not sure if coated is right word; ie I would like the knife to be silver colored, not DLC black coated)
  • Cost is not a huge concern. I would probably sell a few damascus version knives to fund; To put a number on it say $200-$350.

I received the current William Henries as part of a knife inheritance.

Thanks in advance.

Paul

They are a little under your budget and not a brand I normally go for but the CRKT Eros comes in 2 sizes and are very light. The small one with 2" blade is only 0.7 ounces. They have the IKBS bearing pivot system and have titanium handles. There is also the Ripple which is similar. Might be worth a look.

It would depend on what you're saving the damascus blade for, but you can chose to have a pretty paperweight/safe queen or a gorgeous pocket knife. I don't think it would see much lighter use than a bit of office EDC. I say use it!

Nice knife, by the way :)

The Benchmade Shoki 480-1 seems like it'd be perfect, except for one thing: the lack of a pocket clip. It does, however, come with a leather sheath that has a pocket clip. Here's a pic from the good folks at Knifecenter that shows the sheath:

The BM Opportunist is somewhat similar to the Shoki but has a pocket clip... weighs 1.7oz. The CRKT Eros was a nice suggestion also.

I agree and I would use the damascus versions of the knives for EDC except, I would prefer a little less flash, a more conservative knife, and if I could sell a few of the more pretty knives, get a couple of great ZDP189 knives (or similar), and fund a new iPad2 or upgrade my bike that would be the best of all worlds. The BM Shoki 480-1 is almost the perfect knife. I would really like a pocketclip. I have a couple of WH that have the leather sheath with pocket clip, but I would prefer a pocketclip. If the Shoki came with CF scales / handle that would be ideal as well. The EROS looks nice, but I am thinking now I would like CF. I have a couple of titanium WH.

I will keep lookins the Benchmade 480-1 is at the top of the list right now, but I wish it had a pocketclip.....

Kershaw leek is pretty light, I don't know the exact weight but I can't even tell its I'm my pocket

The Benchmade 530 would fit your bill. Light but sturdy, only 1,8 oz. I don´t own one by myself but it´s on my list. LINK HERE!

I was going to recommend this as well. Owned one for a while, ended up trading it, but will probably end up getting another one at some point fairly soon. The axis lock makes for very fun flipping, since you can open and close one handed very fast.

Al Mar ultralight series.

They are way under you budget, but these knives are really nice and seem to follow some of your preferences.

The Mnandi looks very promising. I like the mammoth ivory one and the Box Elder one the best. I am also still liking the standard carbon fiber, but unfortunately it doesn't appear to have that as an option. It appears that Chris Reeves and William Henry are pretty much in the same quality class (hopefully this comment doesn't start a CR vs WH war).

The William Henry B-15 Titan weighs 52gm. They are no longer being manufactured, but they pop up from time to time on eBay as well as Bladeforums.
