Very sad day for us in East Bay, CA

So he didn't necessarily have better training than the unfortunate officers, but a superior class of weapon? Did the officers have rifles?

I have been in Law Enf for 29 years now and we are way to focused on items like, stopping smoking, gun and knife laws, seat belt laws, religion laws, talking to the 6th graders about the contraceptive devices, etc. No focus on the true criminals, this idiot was on probation/parole and did not want to go back to prison. He more than likely was not even suppose to be on the street.
Then you have the spotted owl lovers and the tree huggers that are getting more attention than us that are the law abiding citizens and need to be voting people in office that are true men and women with backbones like a kentucky saw log.

We will continue to give our condolences to Officers families and our own flesh and blood unless we do something to make sure that our elected officials GOD fearing will make common sense decisions. I have always said "if you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything"!

I am off the soapbox now, but these Officers dying and leaving their families was totally
a breakdown in our so-called justice system!

Well I'm sure they the 3rd and 4th did as they were SWAT. But entering a house with someone who has a rifle shooting you is not very easy...

What I find particularly despicable is the people who held a march honoring Lovelle Mixon. :thumbdn: What a bunch of ..........! (Can't use those words here.) Even Governor Moonbeam* spoke out against Mixon and the Judge who released him on parole.

My daughter, son in law and grandson live in Oakland. At least it's the better part of town if there is such a thing.

*That's Jerry Brown, for those who don't remember his nickname.

Unfortunately, this is true:

Chanted during the march: "OPD you can't hide - we charge you with genocide"

Words escape me.

Actually that's EX-Govenor, now Attorney General Moonbeam! Current Governor is Ahhhhnold.

Change in tactics then? Surround him and wait for him to crack, starve, dehydrate or whatever.

I know, but I still hear him referred to sometimes as Governor Moonbeam. I was visiting my daughter and family in Oakland a couple of weeks ago and saw on the news that Jerry was thinking of running for governor again. You may have ol' Moonbeam back.

Moonbeam was one hell of a better mayor than Ron Dellums, an old recycled Berkeley radical from the Black Panther era. This guy has done nothing but ride around the country and go to parties/conferences on the taxpayer's dime.

He generates so little respect that the families of the slain officers SPECIFICALLY requested that he not speak at the funeral services that were held in Oakland on Friday. At least he had the decency to honor their request.

Some mayor, indeed.

Wow I heard about this too. I pray for the police officers families. Isn't it very rare for SWAT officers to die in the line of duty? I believe that only 1 SWAT officer has ever died on the LAPD.

most recently Randall Simmons was killed in the line of duty. i know of one who died during training (might have been metro, but not swat), but i am not sure if any others have been killed in the line of duty.

What is known about the shooter so far, as well as the details of the incident?

parolee, with an outstanding parole hold i believe (similar to a warrant). the two motors were unaware of his status.

So he didn't necessarily have better training than the unfortunate officers, but a superior class of weapon? Did the officers have rifles?

im sure they had long guns, but specifically what weapons i dont know. either shotguns, mp-5's, or m-4's, probably.

police tactics are nearly always reactionary. that is, the bad guy very frequently shoots first. they have made up their mind to fight, and we have to recognize this and react.

sometime during the traffic stop, he got out and fired on the two motors with a handgun. while the officers were down, he approached and fired execution shots, though one lived for a short time.

i read that the apartment he ran to was his sister's. i dont recall if the rifle was at his sister's or he carried if from the first shooting scene. he was in a closet when swat made entry and he fired through the closet door. (from an article, i have not spoken to any oakland officers, so there may be some inaccuracies). the first two through the door were fatally struck.

surround and call out is a tactic commonly used. i must assume swat believed there to be some exigency and therefore they decided to make entry immediately. perhaps other people inside? potential hostages? its all speculation until the reporting is finalized.

The most reliable information that I have seen indicates that SWAT didn't want to wait him out because they were not sure he was even in the apartment. They wanted to clear the apartment and move on if the tip that they recieved wasn't good.

The tip was good; the tactics involved in the 'clear the scene and move on' mindset will likely be debated ad nauseum going forward. One poster referred to the felon/perp as being 'motivated'...it should be painfully clear now that any and all future 'motivated' perps be dealt with according to standard protocol--to do otherwise, unfortunately, might again not turn out well for the white hats... :(
