Very sad story. Bye bye pacific salt! :-(

Yep, the ocean will giveth...and the ocean will taketh away.
I had a pair of Costa Del Mar's ripped off my head on the surf a few years back.
They were well over $200... I didn't even think twice about it or look back, they were just gone...

You are not alone. I have lost many an item to the sea (including expensive sun glasses), no worries. For me it's been a small price to pay.

never a good feeling to loose a knife... hopefully your new one will treat you just as good as the last one did

Lance,

Sorry to hear about you losing your knife! Perhaps call it a lesson learned and search for a way to prevent future losses?

Like the piece of cork you mentioned or...

What happenhappened to the neck carry you were working on? If I remember right it was some 550 cord with loops in it? Did that not work well? I dont think I would trust a clip in the surf, how about something like a neck lanyard with a QR buckle on the knife?

RIP Pac Salt, you will be missed :D

As others have said, at least it's a replaceable piece of gear. I know you made it your own by making it pointier, so that's the worst part.

I carry two knives when I fish. Tasman on the cord around my neck and PAC salt iwb. I am now giving some thought to carrying them both on the cord though.

In the last year or two I have lost a $200 pair of Maui Jim glasses, other cheaper glasses, a couple of $40 gaffs, a $250 rod and reel, several pairs of pliers...I could probably go on. Mother ocean demands occasional sacrifices. Some do better than others, but nobody gets off for free. :D

She claimed a $500 Timoku ring from me. The wife was pissed. Lost it in 6 feet of water.

You have inspired me to purchase my own Salt (black w/ black blade). I will, however, carry it with some sort of retention on the water.

Having grown up near water (Puget Sound near Seattle) I have lost many things to Mother Ocean. If you want to keep a knife on your waist I am wondering if a retractable lanyard would be helpful. My dad and I use them for diving in salt water to keep things handy, though it might be in the way for you. Something like the retractors or coil lanyards like on this page http://www.diversdirect.com/scuba/scuba-accessories/scuba-clips-lanyards/ though it might be too bulky for you they were hardly noticeable in a dry suit and all the gear we used. The good salt water ones were all brass and plastic to avoid corrosion.

I lost a S90V Para 2 in about 4 ft of water, but lots of grass. I went over the side of the boat right after it but never found it. Don't think it lasted too long in the saltwater.

wow thats harsh... how long did you look for it?

About 10 min. I knew it was gone as we were moving. Still went over the side of the boat but had moved 20 feet or more.

Same here. I have a Yellow Pacific Serrated version sitting in my mailbox as we speak. I need to pick it up after work. Sorry about your loss man. It has served its time well.

Twas a good death. It gave you great service and died an honorable death in the line of duty.

But like any Salt lost at sea, it isn't really dead. Similar to a horror movie monster, it's merely slumbering, awaiting the possibility of rediscovery so it can return to gutting and beheading more fish!:)

Sorry to hear about the loss of the OP's Pac Salt. I have one too. Nice, handy knife. I like to have it when on the water.

I know how it is to have a knife with some 'character' built up on it over the years. I often carry a large CS AK-47. I've used it for many tasks over the years, including cutting some people loose from jambed seatbelts when I came across a very bad auto accident on the freeway. A couple times I thought I lost that knife, and though I can replace it easily (I have spares), I would hate to part with it.

When I first read the thread title, I thought someone might have lost another knife to an airport passenger inspection. But, thankfully your Pac Salt was spared that fate.
