what is their diameter?

I have one of them, i think a butcher knife, but i really don't remember. I want to remove the handle and reprofile it a little, then but some micarta handles and mosaic pins in it. Before i can do that, i need to know what size pins to get, and I dont even have the old handle off right now, so i have no idea what size the holes are.

thanks for your help

I don't know the answer, but would like to point out a gotcha with many commercial kitchen knives -- what looks like larger solid pins on many (most?) knives actually consists of washers with a much smaller pin thru them - this means the holes thru the tang are quite small and may need to be drilled out to use decent sized pins for the new handle.

On the Old Hickory knives the size of the rivet depends on the size of the knife....the company generally used 1/8" shanks for smaller and mid sized knives, and 3/16" shanks on the larger butcher and chef knives.

The rivets are a two piece design, each headed, but one side is a hollow tube, and the other is solid, and a couple of thousandths bigger than the ID of the tube side.....they are called "compression rivets". You can usually find that at Ace Hardware, or most hardware stores that carry "specialty" fasteners.

Since you're planning to replace the original pins with mosaics I wouldn't worry too much about the original size. Just drill the tang holes out to a little over the size you want your pins to be. You'll probably need a carbide or masonry drill bit to do this.

If its an Ontario knives blade(Old Hickory), the cleaver I just re-handled the pin holes appear to be 3/32”, I’m probably going to quit messing around and just drill them out to 1/8”
