Very small dagger

I've been working on this piece on and off for the last couple of months. It was commission by a retired gentleman who wanted a small dagger that could be worn on the small of his back while riding his Harley. He wanted to be able to arrive at a rest stop, pull out this little thing, and carve off a chunk of sausage in front of his friends. He wanted it small, unique, eye-catching, and sharp as hell. It'll be delivered by hand tomorrow and I hope he likes it.

The specs:
Blade: 2 3/4" x pretty damn thin" forged 1095 with forge-finish flats, and 1500 grit hand rubbed bevels finished with a Flitz polish.
Handle: 2 1/2" of Buckhorn(Staghorn) Cholla cactus filled with black epoxy with hammer-textured copper on front and back, and ebony spacers.
Sheath: 6-7 oz W&C leather with polished natural edges. Hammer textured copper tips and ambidextrous horizontal/vertical carry belt loop.

Great little package with that sheath and all.....really nice work.

I hate the handle material, but the rest of the knife is sweet, and your leatherwork looks great.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Love the knife, leather, and story behind it all. Doing a cholla cactus handle is on my list of "someday we'll go to Thorn Valley" projects. :)

Thanks Folks.

STeven - I think cholla is a love/hate thing. This guy saw a larger dagger I had made and he really liked the cactus handle. My neighbor hates the crap! I happen to like working with it and have done quite a few in a similar manner.

James - This piece came from the Big Bend N. P. I collected it about 13 years ago on a 10 day back backing trip with a bunch of folks. I also have some from a trip into the Kofa NWR outside of Yuma, AZ. Although its all over the desert, you have to get a bit picky to find pieces with consistent wall thickness and centered hole. Finding a piece in my collection that had those features, and was this small - was quite a challenge!

That is gorgeous. Having grown up in the desert southwest, I love the handle.
