Hello ;) .

As an interested collector of kukri I am posting these links to some interesting kukri articles on Ethnographic Arms Website, as I feel sure many of you will enjoy the many fantastic pictures & the factual information provided & otherwise may miss them, they were done by a couple of well known kukri collectors who have just got back from Nepal..

all the best to you all...

Nepali museam weapons.{photos.} kukri etc.

&

The myth of the Hanshee{sic.} unveiled.

Also.

ORIGIN AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE KUKRI

Kukrirule; welcome.
Are you someone we know?
If you are, and have had past difficulty, please write the new mods for a review of your status. If you are not, and new to us here, A Very Happy Welcome indeed.

munk--Rusty, I think, would be very proud of you right now. I wanted to add something about metastasizing, but I'll refrain.

kukrirule--welcome ;)

Welcome to the Cantina !

Do you think "Myth of the Hanshee" was suppose to be a linky pooh?

This is good stuff indeed and both fellows and I have written back and forth. They have been very careful about getting more than one source since I have gotten very different information from first hand discussions with Gurkha soldiers, Nepalis and museum academic experts. I was also warned by more than a few people (Bill & Yangdu included) who said stories were more attractive and fun to tell than pure history and be a bit wary.

You can't beat being at the source and I'm hoping there is not only documented reference but old paintings or drawings forthcoming. I look forward to hearing more from both Simon (sirupate) & Jonathon (spiral). The pictures taken at the museum are the best I've seen and I was disappointed to hear that items can't be taken out of the display cases since they are sealed tight. Good for preservation, bad for inspection.

There have been a few past discussions that did cause some aggravation here, but they both respected Bill and I know he responded with his usual grace and live & let live policies.

This one is awesome! Imagine this by Bura with a regular chandan handle....

Imagining it wouldn't be too hard, actually. That khukuri or one very similar to it was the inspiration for the Jange model.

I don't know any of them...
and John I have been following your stuff for a long time and consider you the most informed source of history I have ever seen and have a lot of respect for what you have done...
my impression of their info ( they certainly know way more than me) is sort of a confirmation of the info John has already provided, but its sort of following a path he has already given us. However its still very interesting and I am glad they are sharing.

Email sent to all 3 Mods.

Danny , Bob, You will notice that the article states

"all photos are my personal copyrighted property, taken with the permision of the museam but feel free to copy & use them as long as providing acknowledgment to

Spiral {JRS}2005. "

I think It would be a shame if the other 400 kukri photos never reached public gaze.

The kukri shown has a blade length of some 2 feet.

John thank you for your honest words, To quote the knife expert Bernard Levine " I don't cling to comfortable familiar errors, mine or anyone else's.

I don't mistake my imagination for an information source.

I always prefer primary sources to derivative works, but even original documents contain errors.

Every knife is what it is. No one's opinion can change that. Not even everyone's opinion can change that.

I know what I know.
I know what I don't know.
I know the difference.
When I guess, I say so, and say why.

Being book-learned about knives is like being book-learned about anything else: a guarantee of sophmoric pomposity and public absurdity. One learns knives by studying knives. Real world knowledge enables critical reading. Reading without experience leads to confusion and :footinmou and :o "

Most of these kukri have original spine inscriptions in the manner of the mainly post 1902 so called Longleaf kukris from Atlanta cutlery. I think thats a pretty good primary source myself.

Cheers. ;)

Well, I edited my post so I'm out of this one.
God knows the moderators hate getting emails from banned ex-forumites...
Of course, once you've been banned, you're not supposed to be posting in here in any event, right?
Perhaps a second banning will take care of this...

Sadly, I agree.

One of the beer joints I used to frequent (closed now because of three killings in one year...the alcohol authorities thought that was a bit much) had a sign behind the bar that read "These people are banned". It was a rather long list.

And there was a second sign that read " These people are banned for life". A shorter list than the first.

It seems we have both lists in this forum as well. And that is OK with me. I am used to it. ;)

I don't have a problem with these guys being here if they are upfront about it, don't come sneaking, and don't act subversive once they are here. I love knowledge, and I appreciate varying opinions on subjects. I do hate pissing matches, and I'm not real keen on folks that are ambigous or make underhanded comments. One can state the truth and not be offensive; one can state the truth and be offensive; and one can just be offensive while proclaiming they are spreading truth. I say let it be the first, or nothing at all.

That's so damn well said I have to say so. This is your forum.

Kukrirule, please do not post again.

The mods are taking it up.

I think this kind of research is fantastic and very informative. Add it to your knowledge base (rather than replace/convert).

Both Simon and Jonathan know me and have my email address. If posting these links results in a re-ban (understandable, but sad) - then you guys are free to email me any future links and I will gladly post them here for you.

I don't have enough time to read all the knife/sword forums....so I can't keep up with everything, but I am always interested in study/research.

Thanks.

Dan, there was a more appropriate time and place to state you would gladly post links for Simon and Spiral. The other points in your post, believe me, we are sympathetic to.
