Vex or Tenacious?

Here's an example of why I feel Benchmade seems too willing to cut corners: In their prior advertisements, they stated that their oval hole was superior to the round, Spyderco hole.

/QUOTE]

When did BM say that the oval hole was superior to the round hole? I have BM catalogs dating back to the late 90's when they were still using the round hole and I can't find any such statement. I actually prefer the oval hole myself.

I had a VEX and it wasn't an AFCK by any means. But... it was OK. Now if the Tenacious has a paper thin liner like the Military, I'll be passing on that purchase.:(

Actually pictures show it to be thicker than the Military liner. The "paper thin" liner on my Military (nested) seems pretty strong and engages very nicely. I'd venture to guess it is stronger than some titanium frame locks with real thin reliefs, but ultimate strength isn't as big of a concern to me as much as reliability (which is why I like Back Locks). I believe the Military is rated HD by Spyderco, in the 150 lb. per inch range, which is pretty strong for such a thin liner lock (or any liner lock).

You must not have a 2001 catalog then. Below my post is a link to an image, on the web, of the page in that catalog where Benchmade states, "All holes are not created equally. Benchmade's new oval better accommodates varying thumb sizes, and we still bevel finish the edges for comfort." They then also state, "Once you go oval, you will never go back."

Benchmade's statements in regards to the superiority of the oval hole can be seen, in the 2001 catalog, in both the AFCK II and Ascent II product descriptions.;)

Which of these two would you buy for an inexpensive EDC?

Spyderco Tenacious model 122GP. 3.5" 8Cr13MoV leaf-shaped blade. G-10 handles. Four-way pocket clip. Skeletonized steel liners. Round opening hole. Spine jimping. Liner lock. 3mm thick blade, flat ground. Weighs 4 ounces. Made in China. $31.95

Benchmade Vex model 10750BP. 3.3" 8Cr14MoV drop point blade. G-10 scales. Reversible tip-down pocket clip. Steel liners. Round opening hole. Spine jimping. Liner lock. 3mm thick blade, hollow ground. Weighs 4.7 ounces. Made in China. $41.00

The Vex has only a 2.74mm thick blade stated by Benchmade, but mine seems thinner. I like the overall feel and the build quality of the knife, but I would prefer a more substantial blade for it. So the blade seems a bit tiny to its bomb proof handle for me.

Glad to hear that the Tenacious has a thick liner. I've always wanted to buy a liner lock version of a "Delica" looking knife. I'll be looking forward to getting the Tenacious.

OOOOPS! My bad. Yeah you're right. That sucks, especially since I prefer the oval hole. I have to say that the new Pika's do look better with the round hole.

Thank you both!;)

Yeah, my BS/hypocrisy meter really spiked when I saw that Benchmade had returned to using the Spyderco, round hole after having stated in their 2001 catalog, "Once you go oval, you will never go back." I guess they couldn't even follow their own saying/advice!

No worries, my friend.:) I actually liked Benchmade's oval hole, too. Oh well.

I know what you mean about the Military's liner. It's not as chunky as some (like Kershaw's JYD II, keep in mind, however, that the JYD II's locking liner has a very, very thin cutaway), but I certainly wouldn't call it "paper thin." The Military's locking liner is approximately .050"/1.25mm thick, stainless steel, which is considerably stronger than a Ti liner the same size (like most older Emersons and most older Benchmade liner lock models like the 970/975 series, the Stryker, the Leopard, and the full-sized AFCK). Heck, Buck's Tarani/Strider FRN Police knife had a .040" thick, stainless steel, locking liner! Most CRKT liner lock models have .040-.050" thick, locking liners. The BladeTech Pro Hunter, which I have, uses a .040" thick, stainless steel, locking liner as well, and I've yet to hear of problems with that knife's lock.

thicker liners aren't necessarily better unless the "footprint" that the liner makes on the tang of the blade has maximum contact..... for example I bought a folder from Ontario knives with a linerlock 3 times thicker than that of the Military but because of the aforementioned, the knife still has 1-2 mm vertical bladeplay all the time :jerkit: This experience made me stop obsesssing over the thicker is better bandwagon...

I just picked up a Tenacious today, I think it's a very good buy. A whole lot smoother than the Vex I handled at my local brick and mortar. Appears to be well built, sharp out of the box. I guess only time will tell, so I have rotated it into my EDC starting today.

I have the Vex and it works for me. But for $32 bucks, you better believe i'm going to pick up a Tenacious.

Glad to hear all of your thoughts. It looks like I'm getting a Tenacious when it gets to my local knife shop. Something about the Vex, when I held it, said "wait and you'll find a better deal".
