It's not all about buying knives.I have mentioned the issue is manufacturing accross the board.Every products origin is important.Yes, I've also urged this at other forums I belong too.
But the brands of products are more important, because they determine the distribution of profit. Let me give a simple example. By manufacturing one pair of Nike shoes, averagely Chinese earned $3-4. Generally Chinese only earn about 1/20 to 1/15 of the gross profit. Where does the left go? Nike, US government (tax), and US dealers/retailers. As to the case of Benchmade Vex, I think the unit price Benchmade pays to its Chinese manufacturer is very likely less than $5 (including labor, material).
The brand thing is one of the reasons why I was wondering if you also urge
other people to boycott imported cars. Since the brands of those cars are owned by foreign companies, much larger portion of the profit goes to non-American pockets. So if you dissuade people from buying a 35,000-dollar imported car, you need discourage much more than 1,000 efforts to buy Benchmade Vex in order to save the same amount of money for USA.
The other thing I'd like to mention is that cheap imported products keep the rate of inflation in US low by counteracting the serious asset inflation.
The regression of American manufacturing industry is a complicated issue. Personally I don't think it is helpful by not buying 35-dollar knives made in China.
