Hey everyone! I am new to the forum scene. But I have read quite a bit from here and you guys have incredible knowledge. My question is, I am planning to build a grinder. I recently bought a 1.5hp Dayton 3 phase motor for $35. I also bought a vfd, which is a teco fm50 rated for 2hp. What I didn't realize til after I bought it is the input for the drive is 460v 3ph. If I run standard household power, 115v into the drive will it destroy/not work? I'm not very good with electrical stuff. I don't have 220 in my shop. Thanks

If it specifies 460 3 phase for an input than it will not work with single phase 120v. The FM50 101-C specifies 100-120v single phase input and 3phase 240v output. Any chance you could return yours and pick up the 101-c?

If you ask a Moderator to move this to Shop Talk, you will probably get a good answer. Click the little triangle in the lower left of your post to request it be moved. Best of luck and welcome to the forum.

The easiest way to have a moderator see these things (incorrectly placed threads) is to click the small black triangle below each post, and when teh form comes up, ask a mod to move it to a more appropriate section. Believe it or not, we actually read those things by the hundreds. We always appreciate that kind of help.

Moving to shoptalk, the appropriate place for these threads, General Knife Discussion is for discussing knives. Shop talk is for discussing grinders and knife making paraphenalia.

You need the right VFD for the input and output power requirements. It needs to match the motor size and voltages, too.

If at all possible, run the VFD on 220VAC single phase in and 220VAC 3 phase out.

I feel most 120VAC input VFDs outputting 220VAC are best for 1Hp and lower.
