Ive read over alot fo the VFD info here and understand the overall use of them and setup. However I have a question on this guy http://www.factorymation.com/s.nl/it.A/id.193/.f?sc=2&category=30 I have one of these I had gotten a while back and was wondering if a 1HP motor is the highest that it can handle or is that the highest output it will achieve. Basically if I went with a 1.5hp 3phase motor for now could I use the VFD then upgrade to a higher HP one later or would I need to do that now.

Appreciate any info, I am a mechanic and not much of an electrician.

I find myself in a similar boat than you and I have had to study up a bit in the last week. I am by no means an expert so take what I say with a grain of salt...

You need to find the full model number of your unit. If it's a single phase 100v-120v model 101x (the first one denotes 115v and the 01 denotes 1 HP), which is what I think you have then it looks like 1 HP is the maximum you can handle. I don't know what the ramifications would be to running more HP but I doubt it's good. It is possible it would work but just reduce the effective output of your motor to the limit of the VFD, 1 HP in this case. Anything higher than 1 HP and you would need a different VFD and 220v power.

LOL - I just saw that this post is two month old so I hope you worked it out by now.

I ended up getting a 1HP 110v motor, it works really well. I have it single speed just waiting for some pulleys to come in. Even with a single slower speed it works very well compared to my old 2x42 which was very fast. I am just hanging onto the vfd that I got for a later time, sure Ill find a use for it.

Thanks for the response even if it is an older thread.
